hi all . i have a 1985 johnson 120 horse motor .and yes it still has that miss . i noticed if you stand at the back of the motor at the front of the motor on the left hand side there is a small red plastic lever that is pointing straight up and down , but you can move it to the left or right . it is just before the carbs and it is down at the bottom . can anybody tell me what it is ? i looked my manuel but it does not show it . thanks .

its a manual choke, your keyswitck activates it electrically,if the key should fail, you can turn the lever and it will allow fuel to flow into the intake while cranking, once started, you put it back so its strait,if its turned it can cause you to have a rich mixture, and will effect mostly at idle, high speed can handle the extra for the most part

The lever should be straight up,down, or back for normal operation?

The red lever should point along the body of the what I believe is technically called the "fuel starter solenoid". If you have it pointed out or away from the body of the solenoid you are in the wrong position. See attached pic for correct placement.
