What is this guard around the valve spring?

Ayuh,.... If the valves don't rotate, you'll be replacin' the heads in short order,....
The valve rotators are the spinning part on the bottom of the valve, but can I just leave the oil control sleeve off? They're a real pita to install, it seems like their purpose is...well oil control? It seems in this engine there's not really any valve stem seal, just a plastic cover really so I would think the sleeves help prevent oil from going down the stem and into the combustion chamber? But are they really necessary or just over-engineered? I've never seen these sleeves in any other engine.

Are you using stock valve seals or upgraded?

If using stock, use them. If using improved seals, you can eliminate them

I actually just re-used the original ones, they were in good shape and the engine only had 8 hours on it, but had been sitting for 25 years. Do you have a link to the improved seals you're referring to?
