What is this hose for - 40hp Evinrude

On a couple mid 60's 40hp Evinrudes I have, there is a 1/4" o.d. rubber hose going from just under the flywheel on the right side to the front near the bottom of the powerhead. <br />On the one I'm trying to get running first, this hose had a couple cracks (air leak) in it. When I tried to start the motor, it would fire, but wouldn't stay running. <br />Is this a possible cause for it to not run? I just got another hose to replace it, but haven't had a chance to install it and try running it again, yet.<br />I just checked/cleaned the carb and it seemed to not have any blocked passages in it.<br />BTW, I noticed when I was trying to start it the other day that the water inlet is so close to the cavitation plate that I'm not sure the clamp-on flush adapter (rubber cups) is getting any water into the motor.

amigadragon,<br /><br />this sounds like your fuel intake hose that brings gas and air to the piston i have the same problem with my evey 18hp fastwin the engine seems to sneeze so replace that hose and see what happens

Use a garbage can as a test tank to supply water. The main water pick-up is located on the skeg behind the prop. You need the proper flushing device, muffs won't work. The hose in question sound like an oil recirculation hose to me. Yes it does need to be hooked up and not leaking. Anything haveing to do with crankcase presure or vacuume will have an affect on the operation. The crankcase needs vacuume in order to draw fuel from the carb, then it needs compression/presure to force the fuel around the by-pass ports into the cylinder/s.

You can order the correct Tempo flushing device from West Marine for about $30. No other device will work.

Well, changing the hose didn't help anything that I could notice, but at least now it won't be a problem. <br />I just checked the spark. One is strong and the other is weak, so that may be why it doesn't want to stay running. I'll get a new set of condensers in the morning and see if that helps the poor spark. I hope it doesn't end up being a weak coil instead. <br />Once I'm ready to torque the flywheel down before trying to start it again, what should I use to keep the flywheel/crankshaft from turning? <br /><br />What is that flushing device like? Any site I went to find it didn't have an image (that worked) showing that one. I've seen some of the muff types with flatted sides, is that what it's like?

Once you have the flywheel off you may as well remove and inspect the coils for leakage and cracking. This is quite common amoung motors this old. You may as well replace the points as well. No sence in doing a half way job and then expecting your motor to run good. Use a big strap wrench or if electric start, get an automotive flywheel holder/turner to hold flywheel during torquing. The flushing device is a metal vee shaped affair with springs that attach to the cavitation plate. This holds the unit to the skeg. Trust me your better off with the trash can. The port you are trying to water up is an outlet, it is called the bypass.

I'll ask my cousin if he has a flywheel holder in his shop that I could borrow. <br />I made a puller out of some plate steel that took the flywheel off the '67, but the '64 is resisting, bending the plate a little and broke one of the pulling bolts (guess I need three grade 8 bolts).

Well, I found the weak spark problem on the '67, one of the points. The mag coils look good. Now I have hot spark on both plugs. Will fire it up in the can in the morning. Now I just have to rig up a mount for the flex cable so I can steer it (this motor doesn't have the hollow tilt bolt like the other one did).<br /><br />And I'm still trying to get the flywheel pulled on the '64. Today I even broke a grade 8 bolt trying to pull the wheel. Now Dad found his wheel puller set and we left it sitting with pressure and some penetrating oil overnight. Any ideas while I still have this thread open? I'll open a new post on the '64 rude soon.

You can buy stearing kits that bolt to the transome in stead of using the tube. Those flywheels can be a real pain. Here is what I do. This is a last ditch deal, either make or break. Thighten the puller as much as you can/dare. Lay motor down on a piece of plywood. Set blocks under it at places you think necessary. Rotate flywheel so the keyway lines up with your best, clearest swingway. Get a fairly heavy hammer, take a robust,well aimed smack and knock that sucker off. Remember you may ruin the flywheel doing this. But the whole motor is worthless if you don't get the flywheel off. I suggest you monkey around with it for a few days before using this method.

Success!! The '67 is running. I'm not sure how well the idle mixture is set, but we can play with that once we get it in the lake. I noticed that it dies when I put it in gear, but it could be just cold or wrong idle mixture, also I can't get it to idle very slowly without dying yet. But now we can play! And I'm rigging up a piece of angle iron for at least a temporary steering bracket (Merc Quicksilver flex steering).<br /><br />BTW, I bought this outboard for $100 last spring on my way home from the Twin Cities.

Well, I have the '67 fairly well adjusted and running nice, even idling. It does have an occasional bump at lower RPMs (like a miss) but I suppose that's to be expected in such an old motor. I've run probably 12 gallons or more through it over the long weekend.
