Looks like a late '40s or early '50s 2.5, 3 or 5hp. That motor has a built in fuel tank on the top. As TD says, look for the model number for a definitive ID.

I'll call it an early 50s Johnson 5hp. Model number would be one of the following:

1950-1951: TN-25, TN-26, TN-27
1952-1953: TN-28

If the boat doesn't leak and both the trolling motor and outboard run, $275 is a great deal. Even if there are some minor problems, it still isn't a bad deal.

Where I live you can't give a fiberglass hull away. Small aluminium hulls are in higher demand. Check the hull for damage. How much repair needed to the wood. Try to turn the motor over by hand to see if it is siezed. Could be a sweet little motor or could be a nightmare. No trailer? Offer less, unless there is a lineup. He is threatening to haul it to the dump anyway. Good luck.;)

Boat resembles a lone star the 2 I had were sturdy little boats. The johnson resembles a number of the TD,TN series motors could be a TD 15 from 41,42
TD 20 46-49 TN series 50-53 I think the model number appears on the lower side of the crankcase visable just under the edge of the lower cover. The TN has a neutral clutch. All good motors in their day, smooth, sturdy easy to work on.360 degree reverse.Integrated tank.I believe the TN series uses the modern ignition found on most of similar age Evinrude Johnson motors.
The older system works well and is pretty bullet proof.

Re: what is this motor?

I agree that the motor could be a TD-20 or TD-15. The forward facing "horns" on the motor tipped me off to possible early 50s vintage, but I didn't realize that the 40's motors had that feature also.

I just did a little surfing and I think Steelspike is on target - the earlier 5hp models look essentially identical to the 50s series motors. I also ran across something that suggested that there was a "TS-15" motor made in '41, in addition to the TD-15. I don't know what the difference between the two was.

One thing that I am pretty sure of, is that your motor is not an early 50's 3hp. From everything that I have seen, that motor has a different midsection and gearcase. Its basically the same "weedless" gearcase that was used on the 3hp and 4hp motors from the 50's through the 60's.

Unless the items in the sale have major problems, I think I would be inclined to go for it. I might also be inclined to pay a couple of hundred bucks for the motor alone, just for the "cool" factor! If it runs or can be made to run, that's just lagniappe!

TS-15 (1941 only) and TS-20 (1946 only) did not have a recoil start. TD-15(again 1941 only) and TD-20 (1946 - 1949) had recoil start.

1941 models were all dull aluminum in color. 1946 - 1950(?) were all "Sea Mist Green".

Hope that helps.

I think the "S" stands for Standard (no rewind), "D" stands for Deluxe, meaning rewind starter included and "N" stands for Neutral, which some of these old 5hps had a shifter that allowed you to take 'er out of gear.

The one in the picture does not have neutral feature, making it either a TS or TD - definitely not a TN. TNs use the star type waterpump impeller at the gearcase/mid-section splint, while the TS/TD motors use an oscillating pump on the propshaft - much less of a bulge at the gearcase/midsection area.
