Techumseh engine. I've never seen a lower unit like that one. It isn't an Eska.

Should be a small aluminum tag mounted to a screw under the fan shroud. Usually located near the center of the crankcase halves on either side. Looks similar to the expiry date label on a bag of milk :)

New to these older, small engines. What type of gas does it use? 2-Stroke? Sorry but I am kind of clueless.

Re: what is this motor???

Up until 1969 most Tecumseh 2 cycles used 16:1 then in 1970 they changed to 24:1, in 1974 the ratio was changed to 32:1 then along about 1975 Tecumseh began recommending 50:1, from what I have seen bearing designs and metallurgy along with oil quality played a big part.

That being said we need to consider that 2 cycle oil has come a long way and engine design as well, some synthetic blends will recommend as high as 100:1 to replace the 50:1 mix recommended by a manufacturer.

I would not run your engine with less than 24:1 mix ratio with 2 cycle dino oil for air cooled, a good tcw 3 water cooled dino or synthetic will work good and you may be able to run it at 32:1.

Thanks for quick response! I just started this engine right up, and noticed it was leaking here. Taking the carb off I also noticed the gasket from the carb connection to the cylinder area was pretty dried up. Here is a pic I took of the carb, do you think that diaphragm will fit?

Re: what is this motor???

I have one of those tecumseh diaphragm part number 630978 for a snow blower carb.I measured the mounting holes as follows 1 5/16" from center to center on the mounting holes in both directions and 1 13/16" center to center measured diagonaly. The diaphragm measures 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" square. If your old diaphragm has these dimensions, then it will fit.Hope this helps.

If you can, post some pics of the lower unit too. That would be a help. I had a little jet pump model once and the powerhead looked just like yours here.

Re: what is this motor???

Ill get pics of lower unit later tonight. Anyone if they still make that fuel feed elbow part with threading? I got a replacement one that is just a push in, and doesnt fit. I added threading but it is a little but crooked, and want to know if someone has the part# for an elbow with threading.

Re: what is this motor???

Just got around to fixing this thing again, it sucks air and fuel. Prop spins no problem, throttle is up and running.

HOWEVER, the bottom of my carb is still dripping fuel when the tank is more than 1/4th full. I pulled it out again today

and put the new carb parts I have on it, tightented the bottom piece as much as I could. IT is running much better with

new carb, but still dripps fuel. Any ideas how to help me? Fuel dripping on bottom of carb below where fuel feed line is entering.

That is totally an Eska leg. I have a 72 single cylinder and the lower unit/ swivel bracket looks identical

Re: what is this motor???

the engine is a Tecumseh V51,
I would use a dab of black silicon on both sides of the diaphrams mating surface

Re: what is this motor???

Also, Im not sure how long these things should be running for, but I cant get mine to keep going past 3-5 mins. Sometimes is chokes out slowly, and sometimes just an sudden shut down. This thing let me down yesterday on my first trip to Flamingo to go fishing, and needless to say, was a big disappointment. When it runs, it runs well, but not very long. I was told to do a compression test and maybe check the piston ring, but have no idea what compression should be for comparison.

Any help can go a long way. I am debating selling it and my boat for something bigger/newer for more reliability. However, that is not what I really want. I have a budget set up, and put some work into all of this, and would loose money selling.
