Re: what is this motor???

Does that mean its always going to give me problems? I got a great deal on it, cleaned the carb put in some fuel and off she went. I was soo excited. But now that I need to rely on it, its letting me down. Are these engines just to old to be super reliable?

Your engine throughly gone through could be made reliable, however in touching all aspects it would take to get it there would be something you would need to be dedicated to and have patience, but to be honest that old of an Eska engine is a better wall hanger than a fishin buddy.

EDIT: I don't believe I said that

Hehe. You mad you said that because you would never hang an engine on the wall? Or because it very well could be reliable. The ONLY reason I am considering getting rid of this, is because its my first outboard, and I bought it to be used on a boat. I have no problem working on it to get it to run reliably, but to have this engine around to simply work on, with no real hopes of getting to push my 10' jon consistently does not make sense to me. I guess maybe I should start off doing a compression test, what would a good compression on this boat be?

Can someone help me with finding the right piston ring or piston assembly kit? The model V51 I cant seem to find that exact model on the web. Also is there a place that sells cylinder sleeves incase mine is all scratched up?

Doc I'm not trying to advertise for these guys but wanted to show you what was out there that might fit your outboard, its kind of hard to say if this one will or won't but at least its a place to start looking and thinking I saw no v51s. the v51 had 2" bore and 1 5/8 stroke 5.1 cu. In. displacement, theres also a v58 engine.
Typical v51 engine number T634-x

from an e-mail exchange with Yves Castonguay and Tom @ Buzzard Bluff and myself

The oldest my manual go's back to is model 1147 3hp made in 1965 using the split case v-51, Tom may know more about it and have a manual that goes farther so I will cc this to him, also he has a fine old Ted Williams V-51 engine model T634-10 vintage 1967 he's looking for a carb for it.

Vol. 1 of the Intertec manual for 30 HP motors prior the 1969 is the best source I've found to date on the V-51 design. It's listed under Tecumseh engines rather than Eska. It is a unique design and doesn't share parts with any other Tecumseh engines with which I am familiar.

Only YOU can find the source of your carb fuel leak! You're there, you can see and touch it while anything we said could ONLY be a guess. But if you will persevere and use your head eliminating one possibility at a time the problem CAN be solved!

There's no reason your engine can't be made dependable. If it starts easily and runs well before it quits then compression isn't your problem. If it has good spark at all times then it isn't ignition. That leaves ONLY a fuel delivery problem and you already know you have issues in that area. Resolve them and it should be dependable---but only you can do it.

A 2 cycle engine is so simple that it can make you crazy. It only needs 3 things to operate---fuel, compression and ignition, but getting all 3 things absolutely right is required. Attack them a single component at a time and get that Intertec manual!

Re: what is this motor???

Thanks, that makes me feel a little more capable! I searched and saw a few other threads about this leak problem, maybe I didnt describe it very well. The fuel leaks from the carb, and drips down the bottom part, and fuel is also coming out of the air intake. I saw some people had the same problem, but I am not very familiar with the part names so I was a little confused.

Also, last time I ran it, it started up first pull, ran until I tried to slow down for another passing boat, and it just shut off. After this, I was unable to get it started again for about 30 mins. The fuel would start leaking through carb and out the air intake, while it lightly smoked... Does this seem like a fuel source problem? I read more about the gas/oil mix and how delicate it can be, is just buying one of those 2stroke oil bottles for 1 gallon of gas enough, maybe too much? These things are air cooled right, so is it too hot down here in South Florida to run it for more than a few minutes?

I have been looking for that Intertec manual, and have just about pulled the trigger on it. Thanks again guys.

Re: what is this motor???

Sorry to bump an older thread, but the teeth on my flywheel are slowly but surely chipping off from the pull start. I would like to replace it, but Im not sure which one or size I need to get. Any help is appreciated. Also, found this online, so people with the same engine can have a little more info on the V51, 4HP.

Re: what is this motor???

Sorry for the wrong use of terms, they are not teeth, I guess they are called the fins on a flywheel? The parts on the top that the pull start connects with when you pull it.

This guy has lots of stuff, I have bought from him be he will not communicate very well before you bid...but he has nice pictures and free shipping, the one pic is of a green v51 engine I think and I think one of the flyweels went with it. I'm sure theres some others but I just ran a quick search from my list.

Re: what is this motor???

is that an actual production motor, or a homemade hybrid that had an aircooled engine mounted on an eska leg?
