What is this part?

1988 Johson V6 150GT

There is a small "pack" bolted to the block with a few wires going to it under the flywheel/stator at the rear of the motor. This part caught on fire the other day. I was just wondering if anyone could identify that part and may have any clue why is had a meltdown. Thanks!!!

a picture would sure help. could be power pack, tilt n trim junction box.

Sounds like one of the coils shorted out.

turns out to the be the regulator/rectifier. I believe the stator is shot too. It's burned pretty bad.

oh well. went and bought a brand new motor. this one is not worthing sinking the time and money into.
