You're trying to detach the winch cable and put the bar on with the boat still in the water?

yeah. this is how one guy described doing it.

otherwise the winch will be the only thing holding it and will put tons of stress on it.

While I have never seen this arraingement... Is there any reason you could not put the bar on after you pull the boat and trailer out of the water?
Could this be done in the parking lot?

i thought about this but not too sure if once it was out of the water and on the trailer if i would be able to winch it the resy of the way.

i thought about this but not too sure if once it was out of the water and on the trailer if i would be able to winch it the rest of the way.

I am thinking that winching it the last foot will be easier on the flat parking lot than winching uphill on the ramp.

A 4000lb boat will typically generate 10% drag on the bunks. 400lbs.
Then add another 25% going up the 15% grade of the ramp. 1000lbs.

Total: 1400lbs up the ramp. 400lbs on the flat.

...But as soon as I release the winch to put the bar on, the boat slides back.
You have the trailer WAY too far in the water.
Typically only the last foot or so of the bunks needs to be in the water.
The winch is there to WINCH!
If you can't move the boat on the bunks with the winch, something is wrong.
Bunk lube is amazing stuff! So is a larger winch. :D

yeah i get what your saying. the red arrow is typically how far i have the trailer in the water.
this is all a learning experience,

so the winch will hold the boat as i pull it up hill if i dont have that bar connected?

That bar will keep the boat from going forward. (Tension)
It will likely Buckle if the boat really wants to back up. (Compression)

The Winch Cable should have the strength to lift the boat into the Air!
Don't Actually Try That!!!! :D

The Safety Chain is your insurance policy.
Is the Safety Chain the the picture a Chain? A Cable? Or, Please NOT!, a ROPE?

How far you put the trailer in to recover the boat will need to be determined by experiment.
Typically the top of the tires are still above water. Or at least the top of the Trailer Fenders.
Without getting into a Power loading, Winch Loading argument; expect to Pay out 5-10 feet of winch cable.
And you ARE going to get someones feet Wet.

Re: what is this part??

lol, yeah previous owner has a damn safty ROPE. trust me that is being changed SOON!!!
i have owned the boat for a month so im going throught the learning process and going through the boat and figuring out the little things that need fixing.

yeah i already get my feet wet lol, so it seems like im def backing in the trailer way too much. i guess next season ill experiment with it and im sure ill find the sweet spot. thank you for all the great advice.
