What is this wire??

I just purchased my new to me pontoon with a 1990 75hp mercury. I have ordered a factory manual but until then need some help. I noticed this wire was unplugged but the engine runs fine without it. Inquiring minds want to know. It's a dark brown with a white stripe that plugs into a light solid brown wire.

I believe that would go to the trim sending unit for the gauge if you had one.
