What is this with the coil

I just opened the box of a new coil for my 1988 mercury 135.I has a spacer with it and I dont see it used on the engine.Any ideas?

maybe it,s a plug to protect the wire hole lol I have NO IDEA

On certain models the coil was mounted in a different area of the engine compartment which required that as a spacer for mouting the coil.

That coil was used on a LOT of different apps.They use spacers for some.So insted of a BUNCH of different part#s they include the parts in all the boxes.Saves having 20 different coils in stock.
Water pumps give lots of extra parts too.J
