There was some discussion about Macallans on a thread today. I sent a semi-related note to JB saying that I preferred Laphroaig (my favorite). Two things 1) I said I liked the 12 year old Laphroaig when in fact it is the 10 year old and 2) I just happened to have a bottle of Macallans 12 year old and delved in to that tonight. Actually, very nice!!! I stand corrected, but I still prefer the Laphroaig.

What is/are your favorite single malt(s)? Let's stay within reason, less than $75 USD/liter. My experience is that the distance from Scotland and the exchange rates do not make that much of a difference in price.

Glenfiddich for me, although I have recently been given a bottle of dimple. Haven't openned it yet, it may become my new favorite :) .

Never on ice, always just water - room temp.

I have to admit, I pour over ice. I agree, without the ice is the proper way, but I love jinglin' the cubes an lettin' it mellow with the melt. BTW, I grabbed another glass of the Macallans to wait for replies. Glenfiddich is a dependable standby for me as it is more available than the Laphroaig. When all else fails I go for the Chivas. Isn't Dimple a blend?

Laphroaig good, Macallans better :D

Going slightly to one side: I had a buddy years ago that used to charter out his boat during the summer. He catered for mainly wealthy city folks from London. I visited one day when he was preparing for the next trip and was asked to help out by nipping up to the local supermarket for some whisky. He gave me a tenner (£10: approx $18) and asked me to get "supermarket own blend). He then decanted the cheap stuff into expensive (empty) bottles. He pointed out that he'd been doing it for years and no-one had ever noticed

Course he still charged them for vintage single malts :D ;)

Ps. Lagavullan is very nice too but I don't know what it costs in the US

AK,

I love Patron and fine tequilas in general. In fact, this is sacrilegious, I believe the finest tequilas are the best sippin' liquor there is. They are extremely smooth.

And here is one I can thoroughly recommend: Arran Whisky

Distilled local to my home area and tastes amazing.

Again, apologies, I have no idea of what it costs in America but if you ever get the chance to taste it do not miss out ;)

I love Lagavulin sp.? I believe it is nearly as peaty as the Laphroaig . . . I went back for more Macallans. I am now a believer, but I like the peaty stuff better. More fun, more unique to Scotch. The Macallans is very flavorful though. I apologize to the Scotch gods for calling it Bourbon. May ye strike me down . . .

I like Ardbegh too, almost too peaty though. I still think we are all in the cost range . . .

For a softer one with some fruit, I like Isle of Jura.

Fine sippin' whiskey is distilled near my home too. Name is Ball, at least that's what on the outside of the jars.

Nah not strange at all...........I went through a phase many years ago of drinking Boilermakers; can of Bud with a shot of JD in it :D
Real fighting juice and got me into loads of trouble

Side story to this: I read a book called "Sympathy for the Devil" by Kent Anderson about SF in Vietnam (recommended reading to all red-blooded males!). The main characters both drank Boilermakers to keep them angry. It wasn't until I'd been drinking it for a while that I discovered that the name came from the shipyards on the Clyde (about 30 miles away from my home!). Seems the boilermakers in the shipyards used to get just enough time at lunch to nip across the road to the pubs and have a pint. Problem was they didn't have enough time to drink a pint and a whisky so they poured the whisky in the pint glass with the beer: hence the name boilermaker.

.....and I better not tell you what happened when I went through a phase of drinking Grolsch Lager with a Pernod chaser :( :(

Yeah, yeah, I know, a walking mine of useless information.......I'll get me coat

Re: What is your favorite single-malt scotch?

Haven't tried many single malts. Mostly drink Chivas Regal 12.

My youngest daughter visited Scotland this summer and brought me a tiny sampler of Glenfiddich. Good stuff. :)

My son is a single malt drinker. He has given me Glen Livet and Macallans 12 and I gave him a bottle of Macallans 25 a few years back. I think that is the best scotch I ever had.

My Dad was a Chivas drinker and taught me that the "only" way to drink fine spirits is neat. He said that water and other "mixers" were used to disguise or dilute the flavor of poor spirits. He gave me a fifth of Chivas Royal Salute 25 for my 40th. Best blended scotch I've had.
