What kind of person does this? Rant!

I never rant, but I am now. My classroom got broken into Sunday night. Broke the window to gain access and ransacked the classroom a bit and all they took was my laptop. <br />Laptop has grades and all my important documents. Nothing really that important. None of the other technology was touched(TV,VCR,7 other laptops). What kind of person steals from a school? This is a 4th grade classroom. Nothing of any real value in it. What kind of Loser takes a teacher's computer? I am so mad about this! Royally pi$$ed is more like that. Help me wrap my confused brain around this.<br />Bassy

Sorry to hear that Bassy. <br /><br />If it wasn't 4th grade but college.......and the only laptop taken was the teachers, I'd look for it to be a failing student. Doubt that applies here. <br /><br />In my freshman year of High School someone got into the gym locker room and took my wallet.....only wallet that was stolen was mine.......sucks to feel so violated.<br /><br />Hope you figure out who it is, and that it doesnt disrupt the childrens learning.

That's exactly what I feel. Violated. Just an awful feeling.<br /> It won't disrupt the kids' learning. We're working like we were before. No breaks.<br /> I'm keeping it all hush-hush. All they know is there was a problem that caused the window to break. They were all very quiet today. I'm hoping by Friday they'll be discussing it among themselves and I'll be able to catch them saying something that will help figure out who did this.<br />Thank you for the support.

Sorry to hear about this Bassy. <br />It happens all too often. I guess a school is an easy target at night, for druggies and theives. <br />What a shame. I hope it gets figured out and they catch the idiots who did this.

4th graders have Laptops? <br />That was to put a smile on your face! <br />Violated is a good term for the feeling.<br />Guess the question I have is do you keep all the grades on it? or use a backup disk that you take home?<br /><br />Sorry you had to go through that Bassy

Mutants are everywhere, Bassy. For years, i never locked my cars, or my home. I never have been "violated" like that, and as soon as my brother bought my place and moved-in, he was robbed blind. Mind you, he locks everything, even his dog's kennel...As if his pit bull that nobdy can pet but him would hold still for it).<br />Now, the kennel is unlocked and empty. Diesel,the yard-dog, now has full reign of his house while he is away. I pitty the fool who drives-up.<br />I digress. My point is, a mutant allways knows what is inside. If it wants your laptop, it will have it, provided it thinks he/it can get it, then get away.<br />Locks do not matter. Fear of reprisal does.

Sidenote: These days, i lock everything. One of my nieghbors has mutant children, and my stay-at-home dog is too little to defend itself from them..That is the only reason (i don't want to have kill a child, mutant or otherwise).

There is something distinctive about the "kind" of person who would do this - and they are the kind that often talk about it. Based on your discription of what happened, I think "singled out" is what you are feeling. Sounds like the motive was personal. Bad things happen to good people, but don't let it get you down.

Being of a suspicious mind I think it was one of your students or older brothers helping. No reason to single out your puter otherwise.In these gang days 4th graders arent what I once new as 4th graders. 12 footer calls them mutinats, I just refer to them as heatherns. who else knew that you kept your grades in the puter. they destroyed the classroom to eliminate the paper trail to thier grades. now you cant re-figure the grades is the thinking on this.I would look for a student with failing grades or near failing. <br /> <br />Did any other teachers rooms get broken into. maby like a big brothers classroom. You could do like the preacher that had his bike stolen. Preach the 10 commandments and maybe the culprit will come forward, or you'll remember where you left you puter! Jus Kiddn Bassy,, if it was a student, their gossip is what will do them in. Kids love to brag on the bad things they do.

Some six graders (they finally caught 'em) broke into my bosses' wife's classroom, she was the elementary art teacher, they broke every ceramic and project the kids had drying in the room, hundreds of kids stuff.... all destroyed.<br /><br />Then they left.

Yup. Inside job. I bet you already have your suspicions too . . .<br /><br />Bummer though. I hate being suspicious of kids. Side note and not related, but I go out of my way NOT to tempt kids at the house, and we have a revolving door of 10 - 18 year-olds coming and going. If Mrs. QC leaves cash sitting out or jewelry I stash it. It is wrong to tempt them and if by tempting I help lead them to steal something I am culpable too . . .

It would surprise most to know how many schools get broken into. Some are broken into by students goofing around or damaging the school. But school libraries, lunch rooms and class rooms are broke into a lot. Televisions and VCR's and DVD's are not that big of an item to steal anymore. They are not woth much to sell, and hard to handle. Laptop computers are stolen often. The parts are stripped and sold separate. School lunchrooms are often broken into for the cash that is there.

I visited my sister's Jr High classroom over T Day in Monroe, Wa. They had a pretty sophisticated alarm system. <br /><br />I hope you backed up your important files on disk
