I'm no authority but

Ford Ranger if you want a small truck
Ford F series if you want a nicer interior
Chevy full size if you want less options ( v8 with M/T ect... )
Dodge if you want a Diesel
Pre 1994 Toyota if you want an offroad crawler

All these assumptions are vehicles that are 8-10 years old at least. Truck segment has not impressed me since that time

I had the best results with a company truck and gas card, I didn't care what they gave me. :D

I have a 2009 ford f150 that has really performed well it has the 3 valve 4.6 with the 6 speed auto. I pull our 18 foot boat to and from many water holes we also have a 27 foot camper , fully loaded the camper it is running 6600-6800# and gets 12-13 mpg running 60-70 mph. It has been a great truck no issues other then the 3 rd brake light leaked inside but dealer fixed under warranty.

Ram if you are talking 2009 or newer. 21MPG or so on the freeway, nice ride, excellent interior

It will depend on how you want to use it. Daily driver, occasional boat haul, home remodeling? or just looking cool:D

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

well up until a few months ago I had a 2000 F350, 2002 F150 and a 1986 F150, and a Jeep Wrangler, now I have a 2013 Chev 3500 instead of the F350.

Had an old Power Wagon years ago, loved it. I do think the Fords were a little better built than the current Chevy but I still love it.

tried two Toyotas over the years, neither lasted more than 6 months and I wouldn't give you a dollar for one now. Just my opinion, no convincing needed.

I owned a 1996 1/2 ton Silverado. Great truck except that the in-tank fuel pump failed twice in the 3 years I owned it. A couple hundred bucks each time to fix.

Bought a 2003 3/4 ton Dodge with 42K miles on it and ran that for 2 years. Was also a great truck... then the hemi dropped a valve at 58K. $11 in parts, $600 in labor.

My neighbor owned a 2002 Ford F-250 (purchased new) for about 6 years. Went through 2 transmissions in that time.

When I first went shopping for my Dodge I asked my long-time (nearly 30 years with the same guy) mechanic for a recommendation. His reply was, 'John, they all end up in my shop. Buy the one you like best.'

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I never owned a Dodge before until about 3 years ago and picked up a Ram 1500 with a hemi. I'm really liking it very much except for fuel mileage of about 15 mpg.

Either way though, it seems you need a 3/4 ton truck for what you will be doing since it's going to include moving/hauling larger boats. I have a 19 footer and also have moved a 32 foot camper with my 1500, but that was a stretch for it. my boat hauls great though.

My preference has always been GMs, but I think any of them would be good. I'd say just shop around based on price.

Although I'd NEVER consider a Ford. ;-D

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I have good luck with both Ford and Chevy. While I am experinced with their full size suv's, the powerplants are the same. The Expedition I had had 170k+ when I unloaded it. The main reason was the heater core wnet bad - $40 part - $900 in labor. With 170K I was ready to move on. The 4.6l was adequate but had a bad habit of getting moisture down in the plug holes and shorting the plug. Other than that it was Oil, Tire, and brakes.

I currently have a Suburban with the 5.3l. I have done two things since 2004 - Intake gasket at ~50K and I just dropped a chunk on having the tranny rebuilt - this was done at 166K Again, other than that Tires and oil - Brakes are pretty good.

I just drove home last night a new to me 2009 Ram 1500 Crew with the 5.7l Hemi - if I get anywhere neat the service out of it that I got on the previous two I will be really pleased.

I've had good luck with a couple F-150's in the past. Currently I have a Toyota Tacoma with the V6 and its plenty of truck for my uses. Tacomas are probably the most common vehicles used by whitewater boaters. My regular paddling buddy has over 250K on his and I have 80K on mine with hardly anything beyond gas oil and tires. That Tacoma tows better than my F-150 Supercrew did and uses a fraction of the gas.

Suburban 2500 ! ! ! I tow everything with this and then I fold down the rear seats for cargo area. I put a 70 gallon water bladder back there, put a generator on a hitch platform, pressure washer, loads of tools, and I'm off to work on the boats. I can stuff an outboard motor and engine hoist in the back too. I also have a front hitch for the generator platform so I can tow the boat. What a sight ! !!

Here I am in the middle of a storage lot to clean a pontoon. Had to bring water and power with me!

70 gal water bladder for pressure washer here
