Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I gotta say, my little 4-cyl Ford Ranger extended cab (a must) has served me well over the years. I've had to replace the tires, clutch, brakes as expected, but she starts first time, every time, has never left me stranded and pulls the boat, no problemo. Still looks pretty good for her age too. The gas mileage isn't the greatest, but I don't drive very far on a daily basis. Can't go wrong with a Toyota anything either. They're virtually indestructible as well. Best of all, little extended cab pick ups hold their value surprisingly well.

I like my trucks big and ugly, brand is not important as long as it's got character. Current pickup..

The best truck is a truck that will do the task you want it to do. Some are better pullers, some get better gas mileage, others are to look purdy in order to get the future admiral's attention.
Myself, I like my old truck that is paid off, and still does what I need it to do.

Yepper, had an "ole blue" myself but I didn't spell Dodge that way.:joyous:

Funny I cut one up that looked just like that for streetrod parts. The 460 /C6 now reside in my 53 F350 project.

I really like my avalanche, crew cab but its not 30' long, very versatile. 2013 is the last year for hem though, too bad, nice trucks.

I don't know where you heard that 2013 is the last year for the hemi, but that is incorrect. 2013 is the last year for the 4.7L in the Ram 1500. The 2014's get the Pentstar V6, 5.7L Hemi or 3.0L Diesel

I think he ment last year for the avalanche. It will be missed...

Ford guy here.

That 3.0l diesel sounds interesting.

Ah - I decoded hem as "hemi", must have meant "them"

"Hemi" is about as significant regarding technology as Triton and Vortec. Just a name they stick on stuff to make it sound cool. At least Ecoboost means something despite how stupid it sounds.

Just contributing. I use Syntech oil, Fram filters, and Splitfire plugs. Oh, and I think Keystone Light is mopped up spilt Coors Light.

Yup, current Mopar "Hemi" engines do not have hemispherical combustion chambers and thus, are not real Hemi's.. when the term Vortec came out, it had to do with the fast burn vortex heads that had just come out ( 1996 ). Now, I think it's just a name because the technology has moved past that

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I've owned (2) GMC Sierra 1500's, 5.3L, shortbed, 4x4's and they were absolute junk. '01 I ordered new and the '04 Z71 I bought off the dealer lot new. Towing in OD I would probably get 13mpg. Would not buy again...read on as I have more GM experience...

Buddy bought a new '11 or '12 Chevy Avalanche and offered to use it to tow my current boat. It's got the 5.3L and 6 spd automatic. That thing would not tow in OD at all. I had to lock it down to 5th to tow at highway speeds and it still hunted between 5th and 4th going up hills. Anemic at best.

I owned a '07 Toyota Tundra 5.7L, shortbox, doublecab at the same time as my buddy had his new Avalanche and I can tow my boat in OD with no hunting issues. The only reason I offloaded it was that I was told I was looking at a transfer case replacement and needed tires in the spring - probably 3k+ in repairs. I now lease a '13 Toyota Tundra 5.7L, shortbox, doublecab and it pulls the boat better than my '07. Towing I was getting around 16mpg. Around town, I'm getting 17-18mpg - its only got 1800 miles on it so its still being broken in!

So I'd go Toyota Tundra. Now the thing I don't like about either of my particular Tundras is this: Rear is an open diff. Toyota uses the computer to sense wheel slip and will then lower power and/or apply brakes to slipping wheel to allow the wheel with traction to move the vehicle. Never had it kick in when pulling up a ramp but I have had the experience when towing my '78 Trans Am on a U-haul car hauler on an offramp. I had to put it in 4x4 to move due to the road angles involved - downward slope from expressway to upward sloping cross road. I hear the Rock Warrior editions have a true locker but I couldn't swing one this time around. **I proved this to my uncle who was a Toyota mechanic for several years as we were jacking the left rear of my '07 Tundra in his driveway, and with the vehicle in Park, it started rolling forward. Had it had a full locker, it wouldn't have rolled.

My wife's cousin just bought a Ram 2500 diesel. He seems to like it but the Dodge dealers around me are abysmal so I won't own one.

Well...some interesting responses here.
Personally, I think it is very difficult to find and buy a true lemon in the newer trucks these days. In comparison to years gone by they are all substantially better built and more efficient.
Given that, choose what you like or are partial to (Chevy? Toyota? Ford? Dodge? Nissan? whatever/etc) and have it very thoroughly and professionally checked out and you will probably have minimal issues.
Whatever you do....don't buy into too many of these 'blanket' statements based on singular experience and bias or you will be reading forever.;):D

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

Funny, I may be in the market for a truck at some point soon. While I have all GM built SUV's currently I buy them because they are easily bought well equipped for towing when used but mostly because GM depreciates more than anybody in this class. One cost 49k and I got it a few years old for $13,250 from the first owner in absolutely perfect shape who never even had a rear seat passenger or turned on the rear entertainment system with under 60k miles while the other was $46k bought a few years old with 40k miles on the odometer with 12k left of OEM warranty for $20k. They are a testament of why you don't buy a GM new then sell it a few years later. That said, I can't stand the interiors of Silverados no matter how cheap they are slightly used. They are just unabashedly Spartan compared to everyone else. I don't like spartan interiors. I feel like GM truck based suv's and trucks are always lagging behind in deign. If Ford was the heavy depreciator, I'd probably have Fords.

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I'm no authority but

Ford Ranger if you want a small truck
Ford F series if you want a nicer interior
Chevy full size if you want less options ( v8 with M/T ect... )
Dodge if you want a Diesel
Pre 1994 Toyota if you want an offroad crawler

All these assumptions are vehicles that are 8-10 years old at least. Truck segment has not impressed me since that time

I have to second this post pretty closely. I think the Tacoma's are great newer trucks, alot of people overdo it. Buy what you will use.

I have a 2007 F-150 with the smal V-8 and it pulls my fully loaded car hauler just fine with good MPG. I have a small camper and don't do anything that would require a diesel or a dually though.

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I have had silverados for my last few trucks. GM seams to give good deals and the 0% is nice. I keep them for about 2 years before I send them off to the glue factory. With that said RAM is doing a 1500 with a 6 banger Diesel in it. 10,000Lb tow rating and 27MPG highway with 21 city. I think I will wait for the buying frenzy on those to die down and if they are good and no complaints I will change over. I hate what GM did with the 2014 Silverado interior, I think RAM has a prettier truck.

Re: what kinda truck guy r u???

I've had Ford, Chevy, and now Dodge.. They all have their issues.. Right now I have an '09 Ram Quad cab SLT 4.7 2wd that we picked up about a year ago for a very fair price with 40xxx miles, it was an ex lease vehicle.. The truck has surpassed my expectations (I'd bet most newer trucks would as well), it rides great, has fantastic interior fit and finish, gets 20-21mpg in my mixed commute (70% highway), and tows the boat well and gets just under 16mpg doing it. No issues at all so far, though I did buy a superchips programmer and customize the shift points to lessen the up and downshifting, it's hilly around here.
