what model is my johnson?

the guy i bought it from said it was a 96 225hp johnson. im pretty sure its a 225hp engine but there is no model number anywhere on the engine, its also been painted so if it was stamped in the metal it was painted over. is there any way to find out

Lets start with the easy part. On the main wiring harness on the motor - is there a large red cannon plug connecting the engine harness to the boat harness?

well no thats why i want to find out exactly what model it is so i can get a new harness to re wire the engine. the red plug was cut out to relace some corroded wires.

Ok, if it had a red plug then it's a 1995 or older. Now, lets look at the heads. A pic would be great but describe what the T-stat housings look like (at the top of each head).

The harness from 88 to 90 was the same if I remember correctly. Then there were changes in the wire ends (connectors) and other subtle changes. You might go to evinrude.com and look at the parts catalog. Compare the parts picture to what you have, it may help. The early part number may superceed to the later one, a dealer can tell you that.
