what model volvo penta outdrive????

i have a 1988 steigercraft with a volvo penta IO, the engine says aq 211a but how do io determine what outdrive i have? i hear a whirling noise like a bad bearing (metal against metal) that gets louder when turning, i can also hear it at idle at the dock, boat is coming out of water tomorrow[monday] but i would like to know what model outdrive i have, i believe its the original as the motor is also, where there many different models in 1988? i have a seloc manuel for sterndrives from 1968 to 1991, does it help that i have a plastic looking strip with gear teeth on top of outdrive that has to do with tilting? the book shows a pic of it and mentions its a 290 outdrive, is this correct??? help!!!!

yes it could be a 290.

Once you get the boat out, you'll need to pull the upper gear box to determing the damage. Have a look at this link

thanks captain, does this model have a gimbil bearing, i read some models dont have gimbels but other bearings that need engine removal to replace, also if it matters the noise sounds like its in the bellhousing area and not in the out trive, is there access to this area if i only remove the upper gearbox?

Those do not have gimbal bearings, but the do have ujoints, and bearings in the flywheel cover that may be bad. But you will need to get the upper gear box off so you can check things out.

can i change the bearings in the flywheel without removing the whole outdrive?

Sure all you have to do is remove the upper gear box. Then you can get to the 6 bolts holding the clamp ring on, so you can remove the engine to get the flywheel cover off. But at least you don't have to pull the whole outdrive.

All are like that up to 94. Then the SX/DP-S style started with a gimbal bearing. Similar to OMC Cobra and Mercruiser.

ok boat is out of water and im going to tear into it, if engine has to be removed any tricks to make this job easier? also there is a zerk fitting on top of the bellhousing what is this for??? is it to lube bearings?

The zerk is to grease the bearings you're planning on replacing. First pull the upper gear box. Once the upper is removed you'll have a better idea of what needs replacing.

It's a good thing you have that Seloc, you are going to need a good knee pad while working.

Have no clue, not an odds maker. Even if it did quiet down, it would only be short lived. If that bearing locks up and you damage the housing, you will be crying a river over the price of a new one. Bearing DO NOT heal.

Second that, you will want to fix that bearing. Replacing that bell housing is very expensive and if your lucky you wont tear up the ujoints and upper end of the out drive. Its about 120 for the parts to replace the bearings. While your at it, you just as well order the ujoints and drive bellows and water hose. There is also a hose nipple on the outdrive that goes bad that is cheap to replace too.
Pulling the motor isn't too bad. The way I did it was to use 3 4x4 timbers. I screwed one to the rafters in my garage and then supported each side with the other two. Then get ratcheting cumalong and connect it up to the timber. It worked very well. If you get it up a foot or two you should be able to rotate the motor enough to remove the bolts holding on the coupler.

wish i could fit it in the garage, its over 10' high at the windshield plus radar arch when on the trailer, going to pull top end of outdrive thursday, what seals will i need when reinstalling top of outdrive, is it a package or seperate seals and o rings, also i want to thank everyone for the good advice with this project, this is the best forum i have ever been on, thumbs up!!!!!!!

should be an upper kit available. I did mine last year and bought the seals on ebay. Oh, just a little reminders. Make sure you remember what side the shift cable connects to. I forgot when I did mine, but guessed right.

ok can someone double check and see if i have the right part #s to remove and replace upper gear box, 1-925259 2-125017 1-955989 1-832669 it looks to me that these are the only o-rings and gaskets that i should need to remove upper gear box and then reinstall gearbox, i know i will need more parts internally (bearings etc..) thanks. is there a package i can buy instead of individule parts???

ok upper gearbox is removed and u joints were siezed, started boat with shaft removed and was quiet as a mouse. i think luck was with me, i ordered u joints and gaskets and hope to be in water next weekend, my question is what type of oil do i put in outdrive, how much does it hold and whats the best way to put it in? can i pour it in dip stick hole, i dont have a pump to put oil in from bottom!

I'm not sure we ever figured out which outdrive you have. Is it a duoprop?
You mentioned it might be a 290, but you should figure it out to be sure.
Can you post a pic?
