The single prop drives used 30 wt motor oil. Buy three quarts, its just under that.

How do you put your oil in? I pump it form the bottom.

it sure smelled like gear oil when i drained it, very thick also????

I take out the dipstick and then use a flexible tube and funner and put it in through the hole under the shift plate cover. Then I move the prop a few times and let sit for a few hours and check level. I always filled my mer-cruiser from the bottom, but I don't have the adapter to do that on the Volvo.

ok the outdrive definately had gear oil in it but the manuel and everywhere else i check tells me it takes motor oil 30wt, why was it filled with gear oil?could this do damage to the unit, the dp unit takes gear oil but all the sp units call for motoroil, now im really confused!!!!

Because the person that filled it last time didn't know what he was doing.

Just change it to 30W, probably didn't hurt anything as long as it was full. the oil pump (slinger) in the lower circulates the oil better than the heavier gear lube.
It might be more of a problem if it was on a diesel with a heavy boat.
I sure wouldn't loose any sleep over it.
