Just bought a 1970s vintage motor and can't find any info on the model year. I think the model number is 1150ELPT. The serial number is A155312. Any suggestions on where I can get some info. Thanks in advance

Oooo!
Tough one... I'm very new to this, but I enjoy tracing the serials of old mercs. But I can't find anything in the 1970s or a 1150 model for that matter that starts with an "A". But if you misread a "4" for an "A" the year is 1975.

Here's a very useful link that I found. You can download a Operation and Maintenance manual for your engine, And a serial number chart.

http://www.marinepower.com/download/preparesearch?mod=0&lang=EN

English, Operation and Maintenance Manual, Outboard, Very Old, Launch, Pocket Guide (4mb PDF)

Or for the serial number list
English, Model year identification, Outboard, Launch, 1963-1992_Mercury

Hope that gets you started!

Sounds like a "4" as an "A" would be a 1986 115 (not 1150) and have a brown band. Look here for unique paint/year line ups.
http://tinyurl.com/5ogx9

1975-76 have same paint

Thanks for the fast replies. It is definitely an "A" prefix to the number. I have a picture of the plate with the serial number, but I am too computer illiterate to post it.

On the front of the motor it has "1150" and under that is the Mercury symbol and below that are the words "Thunderbolt Ignition". It does have the blue band on the cover.

The mystery continues...

Re: What model year is my motor?

After many hours of research I came to the conclusion that this is a 1978 model. Actually the serial number still makes no sense, but I looked under the cowling and found a sticker that stated that the model year was 1978. It even gave the timing specs. Guess I should have tried the obvious thing first. Anyway, thanks Mercfan and 460 for your help. Your suggestions sure gave me some interesting reading. What a great resource this board is!!!
