What motor do I have?

I just purchased a 1979 Wellcraft Nova 250 XL. I was told that the engine is a 305 Chevy. It has a 280 Volvo Penta drive. The only numbers I could find on the motor were cast right into the manifold. They are 14014434 GM and just below that 12. I also would like to know where I can get a wiring schematic for this boat. Obviously an older boat needs attention and this info is necessary.

Thanks.

You'll have to look at the back of the block, top, next to the bell housing face. There should be a casting number there you can do a search for to determine what engine it is, where and when it was cast. There are other locations too, that one may just show location, can't remember.

Nope,... The casting # should be on the block's flange, behind the portside head....

You might want to post some pictures. Mercruiser and Volvo are 2 different companies. They both use Chevy engines, but that is where it changes.
Since you have Volvo drive and Mercruiser exhaust. Who knows what someone built out of what they could find.

Re: What motor do I have?

Can anyone give me a model number for the motor shown in the attached pictures. This is what I know. It's a 1979 Volvo Penta 305 with a Cris Craft cooling system, a merc exaust and an auto distributer.

I needs some specs, for example, what gap on the plugs, how much oil it takes, etc.

Thanks .

It would help to have the last 3 digits of the casting #, but it most likely is a chevy 350. To my knowledge the 305 was never cast with a # beginning with 397****. Other than the 350, the only block I see cast with a 397 was the 68 - 73 chevy 307.

Re: What motor do I have?

Looks like a mixture of Volvo/Mercruiser.

The volvo engine model number would be AQ225, Merc is 228. Looks like you've got merc exhaust manifolds on a volvo 305 engine, exiting thru the transom.

Should take 5-5.5 quarts of oil,
plug gap .028, 8 deg BTDC timing
These are standard SBC specs.

Ayuh,... It's a SBC...
Dump in 4 quarts of oil, fire it, check for leaks, then shut it down,+ refill to the Full line on the dipstick...
It should be about 5qt.s...
I was gonna say .035 for the sparkplugs,... Captmello says .028,... Either will due just Fine...
And, I agree,... 8?BTC is a safe place to start... After you replace the automotive distributer...

Re: What motor do I have?

Go to your local auto wrecker and get a distributor out of a 87 t0 95 tbi truck engine ,it is the exact same thing. There was a thread going a couple of days ago on this very subject. Titled vacuume sourse for dist.

Re: What motor do I have?

I believe that I may have the wrong dipstick. I already put in almost 7 qts. of oil and the dip stick does not show full. Do all Volvo Penta 305's in 1979 have the same oil capacity. If so, what is it? Once I know the actual capacity I can get the correct dipstick.

Thanks.

5 qt including filter. If you have the stock oil pan. Pull the filter and remove all the oil.Put in 5 qt and start it.
That will be the correct level.J
