What paint for the deck?

OK, I am in NY for some time away from the boat, but cannot stop thinking of what to do when I get back next week. Like I posted before, my deck is glassed in and is ready to be covered (after the fuel tank goes in, etc.). My wife is INSISTING on putting carpet back in it, so my hands are tied on that. Besides, she holds the checkbook! :D

My question is if I should coat the deck before the carpet, and what should I use for this. Should I go with a gelcoat or some other kind of paint that will help further seal it all up? It does not have to be pretty, just functional and last for some time.

If I ever end up putting carpet in a boat, I'm going to find a way to install it without glue. Velcro, snaps, etc... Anything but glue. Then I can take it out and hose it off and scrub the deck etc... That's just my $.02. I can see how my idea would be much more complicated in your boat than in a simple fishing boat like mine though.

You could use tack strips like the carpet layers do in a house on the sides? Then you might have to staple the edges around any cut outs. But I still think Glue is the best way to go. SNAPS WOULD BE CHOICE BUT THEY WOULDN'T WORK VERY GOOD AROUND CUT OUTS I'M AFRAID.

i've been shopping for carpet, looks like the snap-ins use a very heavy backing...adds significantly to the cost. you'd run the risk of the regular backing falling apart or getting stuck to the deck. if you go with really cheap carpet, won't matter much i guess.

Salty you mean cheap carpet and snaps or glueing? I don't quite understand your post.

Re: What paint for the deck?

I guess I was asking about topcoating the deck before putting the carpet down for a more "finished" look. I know it will not be seen, but I am anal about thing like that.

I read oil based Rustoleum would be fine on the glass, but I was looking for opinions.

As for securing the carpet down, I like the idea of trying to use snaps or something like that, but I probably will end up gluing it down, and letting it dry well between uses.

Kep the ideas coming!
