What pitch?

I have a stanless steel prop on an 85HP johnson motor. The prop is not original (obviously), and it was on the motor when I got it. I am not getting all my RPMs and I was thinking that a change in pitch is warranted. The size of the prop is what the stock prop would be, but there are no markings whatsoever on this prop.

Is there a way to determine the pitch of this prop?

Re: What pitch?

The best way is to let a prop shop run a pitch gauge over it. That way if its been altered, youll know it. They can tell you what it is now.

Syart there and post all your test results -- speed rpms etc and we'll go from there.

Re: What pitch?

I have a 1978 85 hp Johnson V4 on a 15' 1984 sundance sunrunner, it's a fairly heavy boat with an open bow. For skiing, I found that a 13 pitch prop is perfect, it jumps right out of the hole no probs at all. I get about 5100 to 5200 rpms wide open fully trimmed. Dont know about my speed, I am guessing maybe 25 mph? I am using a Hustler prop. For big lake fishing, I might try a 15 pitch prop. I already tried a 17 pitch prop and that is too large, I only get about 4000 rpm.
Watersports, 13 pitch is the way to go on this engine. I am very pleased with the Hustler prop, if you get the wrong size your marina will exchange for you
