Just curious...what functions does the bleed system on an outboard motor serve? Does it lubricate and oil pistons, cylinders and associated components?

Re: What purpose does the bleed system serve?

I was under the impression that it was there to pull any pooled fuel/oil from the crank case area to prevent flooding... Right now I'm trying to explore why my engine('83 18hp merc) has no check valves, and if it would be worth going through the trouble to install them. (if it would help the engine's idle at least)

what 2dbit said. 2dbit Are you sure you dont have check valves. I think they might be inside the section beneath the carb, just behind the fittings the lines attach to. Might be wrong about that, but I'm thinking they're there.
