Re: what size punch?

The punch should be just a little smaller in diameter than the roll pin/hole. If the pin is still O.K., then re-use it, but most folks would get a new one at Ace Hardware or similar. I did my water pump a few months back for the first time and I worried a lot about it, but it was really a lot simpler than I thought. Just order your parts on line or from your boat dealer, get your tools, parts and waterproof grease together and just dive right in. About an hour or so later you'll be all done and wondering what all the fuss and worry was about. It ain't brain surgery! Good Luck!

theyre pretty easy to do and the roll pin beats the crap out of the shift bolt on OMC's - i used a small broken drill bit i had laying around to drive it out

I think you're talking about your Tohatsu/Nissan 4-stroke 9.8A3, right? The roll pin dimensions are 3mm x 10mm. It must be stainless, or it may never come out again, and then you would need to replace the brass coupler. The Tohatsu/Nissan part, available from any dealer, including me, is 9514030310M SPRING PIN $0.50. Also available is the Spring Pin Removal Tool. Handy for removing shift rod spring pins when removing lower unit. Punch end is designed to self center in the spring pin for easy removal. Fits 3.5B to 90A 2-strokes, 8hp-30hp 4-strokes, and all TLDI models Part # 345722270M $14.97.
