OK, Im working over a 1988 Mercedes 560 SEC, I got to the brakes and removed the rotors and all and had them turned, bought new bearings and pads. Today I am ready to assemble everything. First off, everything came appart like it should have, didnt have to beat on anything, didnt drag the rotors accross the spindle or anything dumb.

So, whats the problem???

Well, not even th old bearings will go back on the spindles without using emery paper on them first. I mean they slid right off originally, but not now.

Oh, I know, it has been damp here latly, maybe the spindles have absorbed moisture and swelled up!!!

This shop is a constant 62 degrees, was when I started, and still is. How do you warm up a bearing packed with grease?

Well, everything is back together. Dang Germans anyway!

I froze a damp shop towel while at lunch and wrapped it around the spindle for about 30 minutes, went right on.

I use liquid propane to cool things like your shaft. not recomended around flames or even in town. works fine out here in the sticks.

Boeing does pretty much the same thing when putting a plane together. They freeze the rings then slip the body parts on. 30 minutes later at room temp you are not going to get them apart!

Good call on your part! :)

Dumb part about itis that it all just came right apart like it should have. Oh well, its done now but Ive never had to do that in all the years of messing with cars.

Did the same thing while rebuilding a leaf blower with the wrist pin, rod and piston. Just put the wrist pin in the freezer, got all ready and everything just fell together.

USed the same trick installing lower ball joints that are pressed into the control arm. Put the joints into the freezer the night before and they pop right into place with little effort. Got that trick from someone on these forums earlier this year.

Dang there LD, I thought every man knew things got smaller when subjected to colder than normal temps! Jus kiddin! Cars with close tolerances like that just proves the engineering skills of the manufacture. Sure does make for better reliability.

Freon works pretty good as well and not flammable. BTDT also.

LD.... talking about cooling things...

My boss has a mazda pickup, sparkplug broke off in the block. They weren't having any luck getting it out. Someone suggested using dry ice.

He put chucks of dry ice on the spot then used an easy out and it came out no problem. It contracted the metal causing the rusted threads to break loose.
(they had a water leak that they didn't know about)
