What to check out 50 hp Yamaha 2003?

I'm going to be looking at a used 2003 50 hp Yamaha 2 cycle engine tomorrow. I can't bring the boat/motor to my regular mechanic; and I can't get him to the site quickly enough. <br /> <br />Other than checking for similar compression readings on the cylinders; quick starting; and reasonable throttle response...any other ideas? It is not on a lake so I can't really run it as I'd like to. Any help appreciated. <br /> <br />RichG TX

check the gearcase oil condition. ask about any water pump or t-stat maint. ask about the general maint cycle. it must be capeable of turning 5500 or so. if it cant it may be broke. operating range is 4500 to 5500 RPM. you will find that motor usually has compression numbers about 5 PSI lower than the next highest cyl. dont let the spread fool ya. if concerned do a leakdown. the top bottom and middle cylinders on 3cyl yammies are usually spread 5-7 PSI. you really need to make the deal contingent on a seatrial.<br /> or get a really really good deal on it.
