what to do with this 1959 Evinrude 50hp motor?

Hi! I recently inherited a humongous outboard motor (50518) and though I did recently get into boating on a much smaller scale, I really can't use this one. It has been unused for at least 20 years, and sat untouched in a garage since the last day it was used. I have the controls too.

I could really use some suggestions.

Of course, I could really use the money if it's worth anything, but right now I'm just worried it's going to cost me a lot to dump.

Any tips would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Samantha

Put it on craigslist for parts or fix, $200 should see it go.

Samatha, That motor was the prototype for a lot of the motors OMC made for decades after. OMC used a pair of those motors on a 20 something foot boat and drove it across the Altantic ocean, to prove it's reliability.

Seriously, the only good use for it is on a classic 1959-era boat, for show.

BTW - That motor had excellent low end power and will push a barge, with the correct prop.

I bet you could also get some takers for a motor of that vintage on the Antique Outboard Motor Club website ( http://aomci.org/ ), or look to see when they are going to have a swap meet in your area.

Those old controls sell on ebay for anywere from $10-50.00 depending on condition.

I would post it on graislist myself. Doesn't cost ya anything to do that.

Good luck with it!

Samantha,
If you are anywhere close to Minnesota let me know, i will take it for the right price, especially if it has a short shaft.

if you are not too far, I will make a trip to pick it up.

I have a 59 fat 50 with a long shaft and I need a short shaft.

Its real simple to make that motor a short shaft. Take out the 5in extention and get a short driver shaft and water tube. If I remeber right the shift linkage has and extentiong on it too. And then you can sell the suff you don't need anymore

That engine has a tilt assist that is coiled spring that is square in cross section. If you were to trip the reverse lock lever with the engine off the stand , or boat, that spring is strong enough to throw the stern bracket up with enough force to break bone's, or worse. You may already know this, I'm just trying to make sure.

You should be able to find the parts to convert that to a short shaft...drive shaft, water tube, short shift connector...on the free classifieds at www.aomci.org
They are heavy and a bit thirsty at WOT, but they are real workhorses.

Your info is very much appreciated, when i locate one i will likely keep the long as well for future needs if any or if i ever get rid of the motor, others may have a need.

Thanks for the heads up, yes it is a bear trap to close when sprung while off the hull, noticed its much easier to relatch when not hung on a hull or stand if the tilt pin is to highest setting.

tmcalavy, I will keep an eye on www.aomci.org

Hey JP, I tried to hook you up with another member who wants to convert his fat fifty to a longshaft. Did you ever contact him?

You might check your Private Messages.

Re: what to do with this 1959 Evinrude 50hp motor?

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the lead, help and for asking.

I have decided to keep the long shaft, and in time, who knows when I will start looking for a short shaft, if it is absolutly necessary. My intent for the motor is to put it on my 1959 Larson from time to time for the sake of fun.

Mine has the exact same shaft as yours.

I still haven't tried to sell it. Not sure where. I suppose Craigslist is worth a shot!

Sure wish it were a 6hp.

Good luck!

There are plenty out there who would easily make that swap if you're local! Shipping usually makes it unreasonable.
