Excellent discussion gents, I look forward to reading the posts by each of you.

I will try and dig up part pictures of the oil types I have seen.

Makes me not want a 4 stroker !!!!
Always been the same since my first motor cycle !!!

Can you add the synthetic oil to the reservior already half full of reg. 2 stroke oil? Just started boating and have a 96 40hp jonhson with vro.

hi
i can't give you any technical data or long chemical explaination but i swithed my 94 40hp johnson to pennsoil full synthetic when the VRO tank was about a quarter to half full. i had the motor for about 2 years after that and it was still running fine. i assume it still would be if it hadn't gone to the bottom of the lake when the boat was flipped over in a storm. FYI VRO tanks must be pretty waterproof because when we got the boat back on land there didn't appear to be any water in the tank.

Well, I tried it out yesterday, and am pleased with the results.
Only a light tinge of fumes at startup, and very clean after that.
Allmost like a 4 stroke for cleanlness. I'll stay with it, and that's
Wally Pennzy.

By the way, I am running a 40hp '99 Johnson on which the vro was
disconnected. I'm adding the Wally Pennzy direct to the gas tank.
This summer I towed a boat a couple of miles when the 40hp '95
Evinrude just froze up on it. No wonder a lot of folks don't care for
the vro. I had to put a plug on the oil line intake to stop it from sucking air.

I can live with this oil and a 2 cycle motor, and be happy boating.
Thanks for all the feedback. Happy boating to you!

This thread was much too civil to be a REAL oil thread.... :)

Back to the actual motor. Don't expect great performance out of that 40 on an 18' hull, with one or two people it will perform OK, but not great. I've run the same boat with a prop and jet and think the 30 power loss for a jet is somewhat optimistic, I'd say it's closer to 50%. I run a 90/65 on a 15.5' aluminum hull and it's not over powered, I also have a 16' boat like your's with 60/40 Yamaha. It works well with 1 or 2 people, but slows a great deal with a third person and with four it won't plane.

Re: What to expect from 2 cycle synthetic oil?

My tests show that I'm getting about 23 - 25 mph at top end now, with the 40/? jet
drive. Before, with the 18 hp prop, I'd get about 18 - 20 mph. My jon boat is an 1848,
so it's not plowing as much water width as wider boats.

The '99 Johnson 40 hp has very good torque, and runs great, even without the vro.
I'm adding synthetic oil directly to the gas tank. With the jet drive, I can venture
into waters I couldn't with a prop drive, and if you have shallow waters near you,
that makes a difference.

I am also impressed with the gas usage of the 40 hp Johnson, as it is less than
10 years old, and very efficient with fuel usage.

Overall, I am very pleased with the new setup I have. I have another fairly recent post
about how I mounted the motor, and will post a couple of pics on that post this weekend.

Back to the synthetic oil, as I am very impressed with how clean the motor runs with it.
Happy boating!

In my 1974 omc 15, I switched to amsoil. Runs at 100-1 instead of 50-1. Less oil=less smoke. Also, since I'm using half the oil, the price of the high-priced oil is actuall less than the cheap stuff.

I wouldn't run a 1974 engine at 100:1 in any circumstance.

Why are you doing this ???

I run Amsoil too because its hard to get full synthetic in Canada. Amsoil says you can run 100:1 that's why pvanv runs at that. I still fun my motors at the manufacturers ratio using Amsoil. I picked up a couple gallons of Pennzoil Synthetic in the US this summer and am looking forward to trying it out.

Re: What to expect from 2 cycle synthetic oil?

Here in Canada, the price of a quart of Amsoil synthetic (either HPI or Saber) is approx $ 10. and the price to pay for regular Quicksilver Merc is also $ 10. So the reason for using synthetic has to be for other reasons than $$$

I have used both Amsoil HPI at 50:1 and Saber at 80:1 in my 15 hp Force and it appears I am getting more smoke with the Saber at 80:1 so next test would have to be with the recommended 100:1 mix (Saber) but I am unsure about going that lean.
