What to resin

Re: What to resin

You'll need to radius those corners somehow. Traditional method is to create a fillet with thickened epoxy and filler (chopped mat, colloidal silica, wood flour etc.) This allows the glass to make a gradual transition from one surface to the other.

Here's a good illustration of fillets in a S&G project.

The theory behind the practice is that fiberglass is strongest when the fibers in the material are kept straight. Bends, especially sharp bends weaken the fibers and they'll eventually fail. Most woven fabrics will have poorer performance structurally than biaxial fabrics, which have all the layers of glass oriented in straight lines overlying each other and running at various degrees from one another.

This is why woven roving is a poor choice for structural use. It is often used in older boats and older methods but relies, IMHO, too much on the structural qualities of the resins used. Similarily mat provides little, if any, structural benefit to a fiberglass lay up. What it does do is provide a medium for a heavy fabric to adhere better to a core, such as plywood, by filling in the voids between the weft and weave of the fabric. It is also most commonly used on top of a woven fabric to help fill in the same voids so that the pattern of the underlying fabric doesn't "print through" quite as much.

Good luck with your project.

little messy but it was my first time lol.. now because i used the adhesive do i have to put a layer of resin over that or can i just put the mat on now. the bottom where its all globbed up on the side is just extra thats why its globbed up

Resin won't stick well to the adhesive (if at all), so if you plan on using it, the bead in the radius needs to be small and uniform with no adhesive extending away from the radius and on the wood. You can use some filler and make putty out of the resin easily, at least the resin will bond to that, so if you get it all over the wood it won't be as big of a problem.

the mat needs resin under it, very much like a stamp for mailing something. you can try to put the stamp down and lick over the top but it will stick alot better if you wet the under side first.

also, all of the bumps and areas where there are ridges from the leftover glue will either need to be wiped flat when its wet or sanded down before glassing. you won't be able to get the mat to bend over it, air will get trapped under. its alot easier to prep the area right than to go back and grind out bad spots and re-glass em. you'll have to do the same if you use thickened resin too.

I wouldn't use that construction adhesive at all. Use peanut butter, you know resin will stick to it.

Have a great day,

Rob.

"peanut butter" is a mixture of thickened resin. You would use it instead of your construction adhesive. You thicken the resin with a medium of wood flour, micro balloons, glass fibers or the like.

Search the forum for peanut butter.

You fillet the peanut butter into the corners like you did your construction adhesive. "Tip": Round the corners of a 1 or 2 inch putty knife, or use a cedar shim (like for setting doors or windows level) into a "tongue depressor" shape. A nice round tip. Use that for spreading or smoothing the peanut butter mixture into the corners for a nice even fillet.

And, BTW, I've yet to lay any 'glass myself. I'm still reading and learning here! :)

Peanut Butter = Epoxy resin & Wood flour

Wood Flour does not equal Saw Dust

Wood flour is cheap. Other fillers have been mentioned and most have specific properties making them useful for various applications.

Here's a pretty good looking peanut butter fillet

Radius is about 1 inch.

Since you're using polyeser resin use that, not epoxy, but it's the same process.

Don't think you'll find woodflour at Lowes or HD more likely places like Boat Builder Central or Jamestown Distributors or other stores that sell epoxy and resins. I don't think Iboats carries that kind of stuff but I haven't looked.

yah i ordered the name for my boat from iboats and they set me this yellow plastic peice to run over the name to get the air bubbles out.. well i was done with it. so i cut it so the edges were round and fit to make that even spread

A cd disc works good for the fillet, so does a spoon.
