What to use for new bunks..

right now the bunks on my trailer are a piece of steel with carpet .. but their only about 3 feet long and dont extend out past the end of the boat.. so im thinking of new ones.. what should i use?? i don't want to go buy all new bunks i would rather make them myself

I bought pressure treated 2 x 6s for my latest project at Home Despot . . . I like the wider face and the treatment should extend their life a little. 2 x 4 s would be fine though. I found bunk carpet online somewhere . . . Depending on how they are attached today, I'd go with through bolt instead of lags . . .

some pictures of your current situation, will get you the best advice. knowing the boat and trailer, really helps. i have never bought a pre-made bunk.

on the guide on, i now go to the muffler shop, and get 2" hanger brackets, and some all thread to mount them.

Untreated lumber of your choice a staple gun and bunk carpet. The chemicals in treated lumber are corrosive and bunk carpet doesn't rot easily. A lot of people say stainless staples but I've never bothered.

That's exactly what I used...untreated 2" x "6 lumber. I'm debating whether or not to use the "slick" bunk runners or carpet on the lumber.

BTW , my 12' long boards aren't level/straight, the brackets that bolts the board to are different heights thus there's a slight "bow" to contour to the bottom of the boat. At least that's how my trailer is.

The slick stuff available now works great for loading and unloading and is probably less abrasive on the hull treatment but the boat needs to really be secured - the weight of the boat won't do it as that slick material will let it slide fore and aft if not well secured.

Most trailers have a little bow in the bunks to account for the curve of the hull. Even if the wood appears straight at first, it will eventually curve to fit the hull.

i buy carpet hall runners at lowes and HD, 2 ft wide, and sold by the foot. and cut it down the center. holds up very well, tough stuff.

I've used the same stuff, I've also found that it don't hold dirt like the cheap bunk carpet does. It's also heavier backed and easier to attach.
When I did mine, I used a spray adhesive and stainless staples, with the thinking at that a coating of spray adhesive would also add to the wood's protection not to mention stop the carpet from moving around. They've been perfect for 4 years so far.
