Im restoring my 1968 Hurricane 23 cuddy it had a old OMC boot drive and Im replacing it with a Merc. I/O . Im a little of a HP nut so the motor will have more hp than the last one. Im thinking 300 or so . I dont want to replace the transom with wood if I can help it. The guys at the marine store say a urathane board will work but I havent read any one using it just ply wood. I was thinking of making it 48''x30''x 2" thick plus the outer skin 1/4'' and a lot of biaxle inside. The orginal one was a 30''x 30''x 1'' thick. The cost is The same as marine ply. I have fixed many floors, stringers and holes but not a transom.

Re: What to use

Cobia boats use it but its reinforced with fiberglass. If your planning on using 2" thick board that leaves little room to add much fiberglass...

Re: What to use

I thinking of using 1''board layered up to 2''. And laying mat on top to tie it into the rest of the transom

Ayuh,... You're puttin' in a Mercruiser, Right,..??
The transom Must be 2" thick, minimum...
And,...
No more than 2?", Maximum....
And, true, level, parallel, wherever the transom mount touches the transom...
The Closer to 2" the Better...

ImhO,... Anymore than scraps of plain ole plywood is Unnecessary....

Re: What to use

That would answer the question of the urathane board working.
So I should probably use 3/4 insted of 1'' .
The outside shell is 1/4 then that would leave room for the glass mat.
Thanks for the advice this fourm is very helpfull glad I joined.

Re: What to use

when using plywood for a transom, you get to 2 inches thick how ever you can.

the last one i replaced.....i used a one inch thick ply....then a 3/4 inch with fiberglass in between, each surface.

i found using the one inch thick material that it was much stiffer and straighter than the 3/4 inch material after drying.

there are different core materials that you can use for a transom, but unless you can get them cheap its kinda a waist of money.

a well bult and maintained wood transom can last over 40 years.....that is far longer than you will care to own the boat

Re: What to use

Ok the stuff a the supply store is 50.00 per 4x8 sheet of urathane board at 1'' thick
or about 45 for the 3/4'' thick
I think that would be better and straighter than wood.
and I am a offshore fisherman 20 miles is not uncommon.
I have had this boat for 15 years already and pan on having it for another 15..

Re: What to use

Ayuh,... Then use whatever ya want,.... CDX plywood will get ya 15 years...

Just be at 2" when ya get there....

If ya want that Fancy stuff,... Find out who else they sold it to recently,...
You only need a 1/2 sheet, or Less...
If you leave the existing transom, 'n merely plug the hole, you only need a couple of sq.ft...

Re: What to use

Just To add when I was removing the old glass and wood I used a 4 1/2 grinder to cut the glass and partly into the wood then used a air chisle to peel off the glass and wood. That made it so much easier than what I have read. The other guys talked about hammer a chisel and hours later they had it ready to sand. I finished removing and sanding in about 2 1/2 hours . Now to get the materials to put it back together.
Im still undecided if I should put the 327 back in or build a 350 or the 305 thats ready to go in .. Any thoughts let me know.

Re: What to use

Well today I found out that urathane board is NOT a strong enough matieral for any thing of structure. You have to use devinasil board .. Thats a bummer ah well guess its back to the old way of plywood.. Just thought I would share that.

Re: What to use

Slow trying to figure out what to do. Do I pay more for the foam transom or do I use wood.. And also its in the 30s so its too cold to work on it . Any way I also have a few deck hatches that I want to replace Im sure Ill use the foam boards for those. Once I get that done Ill sand her down fix the spider cracks and give her a new color.

Re: What to use

Well talked to a few boat builders to day about the foam transom.. Was told that a 15lb board or stronger would be fine for the job. They recomended a material called coosa nautical series board. Its cheeper than the divinycell board. I found a local marine supply store that has it . I will be setting up a wholesale acc. there and will see how much cheeper it is that way. Its around 165.00 for a 4x8x3/4 board.
