use wood man......save your self a bundle....it will last a minimum of 20 years with minimal up keep.....if you seal all the holes you drill into it...it will last much longer.

by the way.....that transom area being wide open like that.....will make this the easiest replacement in history !

Re: What to use

Man I had a trailer come into the shop yesterday and the owner is a boat desighner/engineer. Whoa did I have a eye opening today when he looked at my boat.
It is a little more complicated than we all thought. The way my boat was built with no stringers the transom replacement is not as simple as most. Being the OMC drive pushed the boat compleatly by the motor and nothing on the transom. The merc pushes the transom and none on the motor. I'll have to be adding knee braces to the hull botttom tieing them into the cap and the new motor mounts.. Now my simi easy transom replacement went to slightly complcated and a lot more work. This is gonna be a longer project than expected. I have decided to go with the 36lb coosa board rather than the plywood I think the little extra money now to have worry and rot free transom is worth it. whats a extra hundred now than a possible rebuild in 5-10 years if a screw doesn't seal right, or a through hull breaks. Well I thinking of starting the material buying after Christmas. Hopfully I'll have her done late spring early summer. Or sooner if work picks up.. I will keep up with this thread and post pics as I progress. I will be starting the hull sanding and patching. Getting ready for paint if I can decide what colors to paint her .

A stroke of luck is what I would call that...to get professional advice and specific direction is something most here don't have the luxury of getting, so hurrah! for you.

Thats true I would have hated to have done the project put it in the water and have the new transom rip out, break, crack, or even worse have all that happen off shore..

This is simply Not true at all redfury ...

You can get pro advice Anytime..just give us the straight and true questions and not beat around the bush to make it lean towards the answers you want to hear..

If this thread was started in the way described here .. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=444084 .. then the the problem of using crap board..or whatever could have been addressed along time ago.

You have to ask the question and give answers/info like your talking to your Lawyer here on Iboats..because if you dont we might just pass you by..

YD.

PS. OP.. use plywood like allready stated..prep and glass untill you reach the 2"ish mark. Remember that if you want more glass you have less wood. 2-3/4" ply will give you 1.5" .. giving you 1/4" glass both inside and out lams... but 1"+3/4" ply will give you a total of 1/4" of glass ( or 1/8 " for each side ). You should know how much glass your going to use before you buy the wood/etc.

Thanks guys . The guy Peter who is the engineer went over all of that and with his calcs. I will be fine. And I'll have 7 layers of 1708 and 1.5'' of 26lb Blue water series Coosa board. The coosa board is only a few bucks more than the marine ply. With that beeing said I'll have the strongest 1968 Hurricane in the water :)

I'm not disagreeing with you YD, what I was eluding to was having someone RIGHT THERE, with hands physically on the boat...sometimes that's the only way to address the more nuanced aspects that can't necessarily be captured with a description or photograph.
