I just removed older motor from my boat and the previous owner had used a
short shaft motor on it so he cut away a part of the transom about 2 inches by 12 inches. I would like to replace this missing part, I have some marine plywood and I used epoxy to glue the peaces togather. My question is when
I put the part in place I plan on drilling a couple of holes down from the top and put in dowl rods, and I was wondering if I should use epoxy or 3m 5200
to adhere the part in place. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Re: what type of adhesive

you need to do more than that, it needs some reinforcing, a 1/4 inch aluminum plate on inside and out. that laps over to the old part of the transom, and thru bolted. this is just a patch job. if you are going to be running a long shaft motor, you need to build it up to a 20 inch transom.

a picture of what you have, and measurements would help get you the best advice.

What kind of boat do you have?

Got any pics?

What motor?

If what your doing will work either epoxy or 5200 will work, I'm just wondering if the extra bit is structural or not. Like are we talking about a clamp on motor or bolt?

^^^^^^^^the above is correct^^^^^^

the repair you have specified is...like td said a patch.....however even with the dowells thru the esisting transom....it still wont hold....and in fact be more work than re doing the transom in the first place!

take pics, and we can show you how to build a correct one

Re: what type of adhesive

Thanks guys for the help I only built up the transom 2 inches high by 12 inches wide and the new motor does not mount to this part and I do have 2 alum. tramson plates to go back on it. The main reason for building it up was to keep the back of the boat level and water out when setting still fishing in chop-ey water . I understand the repair will not support the motor I was just concerned about what to seal the repair with to keep it from leaking and rotting out the transom.

I did the same fix for my brothers Western. You'll be fine, the adhesive should be 2 part epoxy and the dowles can be 3/8 steel (I used use #3 rebar).

The most stress you'll get is when it's on the trailer bouncing down the road. Use a transom saver and you'll be fine.
