Hello all, I have a 40 Lb Minn Kotta pushing my 1990 Bayliner, and pushes it fine. My question is what are the best types of deep cycle batteries to get, for does it really matter. Been calling around...Napa....Wally world..etc. The biggest one they seem to have is around 105 AH and 180 RA. Is this enough?? Also does size matter? The biggest one I found is the Ever Start Maxx at Wally Word, but does not show any AH, or RH just CCA, but it is made for trolling and dual purpose. Help please.

Buy the biggest battery that will fit the available space. The only mistake you can make is buying one that's too small.

Hello Upinsmoke, So I take it size does matter?? The reason I am asking is the types Napa, checkers ets are all about the same size, for the biggest ones they carry for that matter. The Everstart Maxx at Wally is I would say 3" longer. Would thgat 3" make any difference in time of use. Any sugestions to what brand to get, or all they pretty much the same? Any word on Ever Start brand?

Re: What type of battery should I get??

My experience with about every major brand is that the manufacturer knows exactly how long the battery is going to perform as reflected by the warranty. I've bought several of big Group 29 Everstart Maxx that seem to perform as good as any but after 3 years they get retired to running camp lights for another year or two. Excellent value though I feel with good oomph.

Size matters but not as much as weight, thats why I like the Group 29 because that's all the weight I care to heft around. Interstates seem very light for their respective sizes and for that reason I've never bought one. I like to take a pocket-size volt tester and make sure I get the hottest battery on the shelf. Several years ago I bought a freak of nature DieHard that had over 13v's off the shelf, that high-dollar beast pulled like a tractor for 4-5 years, now is retired as a starting battery on my tractor and I'm kinda wondering if its ever gonna die.

Trojan batteries are the undisputed best but I've yet to own a 12v version, c'mon tax refund!

Hey thanks guys!! There are some Trojon batteries at an outfitter here in town, Sportsmans Wearhouse. The biggest one they carry is the 225 and that is $105.00. The most simular to that battery in size and weight that I've found in town is is the Everstart Maxx at Wally for $64.99. Is it worth spending the extra dough? Will I get more time out of the Trojan?

Ditto the Lubester. Trojan has a reputation for some of the best bang-for-the-buck in deep cycle batteries without getting into the high-end stuff.

Hey Santa, have to agree about the trogan batteries, very good low cost. I personaly won't buy another everstart.Bought my first one 5 years ago, and was toast the following season. The boat I bought last year, had 2 new ones instaled the previous season, they held a 11.5 volt charge over the winter, I thought that was pretty good, sitting for 6 months, but would only hold a 12 volt charge when I charged them for the season.Maybe just bad luck on my part?

Jim

Re: What type of battery should I get??

If your talking about the big yellow batterys at walmart, I bought the biggest one they had at least 5 or 6 years ago. I use it strictly for trolling and fishfinder, my boat is 14' so its not real heavy and the trolling motor is only 27 pound thrust, but I can race the big bass boats with the 24v motors :D . The battery is still running strong, maybe I got a real good one. One thing to look at is the hassle your going to get from the store if you have to return it, with wally world I've never been given a hard time, just "go back and get the one you need" . Either way hope you get a good one.

Actually for your application, maybe not. I sometimes fish all day, so to me its worth it, also, Im going to be guiding this summer some, so I cant afford for the batteries to go south on me.
