I want to build a storage area in my boat. What wood should I use. It will be completely glassed in. I have done a lot of fiberglass work before but just not sure what wood to use. A buddy suggested mdo plywood. Any suggestions or comments on structural issues. I plan to put a hatch in the middle. Thanks

Please downsize your pix to 640X480 or smaller.

Thanks. :)

If you are going to glass it anyway, why not use one the many foam boards made for such things. Some bondo to cove the edges to the hull and some matching gelcoat paint it would look like factory. Save some bow weight too.
Hasn't "The G Man" tough you that?

Other wise I would go with a high ply count marine ply and a tube of 5200.

I like the idea and the design looks good.

My understanding is that standard exterior grade plywood is what you'd use for this application. Marine grade would a bit overkill.

If you're gonna glass it....I agree with trendsetter on the exterior grade.

Yes, you can use an exterior grade ply. But, exterior grade will only remain good as long as it remains dry. So if your storage area is going to be used as an anchor locker, or to store stuff that can bounce around and damage the glass, you might get more life out of it by using marine grade.

Also don't forget to put a couple of limber holes through the bottom to allow any water that gets inside to run off.

How concerned are u with weight? I just built a rod box out of trex and stainless carriage bolts. no concern with rot now. It is quite a bit heavier than ply though.

I'd be sure you can still get in to the front bow access panel. You'd hate to have to change the bulb in the bow light if you seal that door shut!!!

No it is balanced pretty well. It sets almost dead level
