Re: What WOOD?

What type of wood is a constant debate here on iBoats. Marine Grade is recognized as the Best, but... Most rebuilders on here go with regular Ext. Grade and soak it with either Epoxy(more expensive) or Poly resin. Use fiberglass mat between the layers of plywood and between the outerskin of the transom and the plywood. Do some searching on the forum for transom replacements and you'll find PLENTY of Pics and help. USComposites.com is a good resource for material OR you might check with your local body shops or marina's for local sources.

Hello 77 and welcome to Iboats..

Basically your have two choices in ply.. Marine grade ( more expensive )..or the other stuff ..

Your going to end up with the Same product for LAMINATION ! . You resin coat more on one product VS. not so much resin coating the MG..

I have found that MG with less resin coating to prep is about the same as less expensive ply with more prep and coatings of resin ( but more Time making Cdx lets say for proper/ease for layups ).

Use whatever plywood you want..just make sure its Ready for Lams ( Layups are more Important than what wood you use.. ).

YD.

Re: What WOOD?

Another big plus I've found with marine grade is it's flatness. So much easier to work with when it doesn't look like a dogs hind leg after ripping some strips out of it.

Re: What WOOD?

Are you talking about splicing the wood (to make long stringers) or are you talking about laminating the wood (for bulk thickness)

Building a transom is easy.

Use 2 pieces of 3/4 inch ply.

Coat both pieces with poly resin(unwaxed), then coat again and put csm (chopped strand mat) that has been wet out between them. Clamp/ screw together.

Do all you can to completely seal up the new transom before you install it.

Then you can use the same method to attach it to the inside of the hull.

Fill in gaps with thickened mix.

Build inner skin up while tabbing it into the hull.

And yeah half the fun is getting that old junk out!
