I am working on a older Evinrude w trim/tilt and I was was wondering what would be the thickest trim fluid that I could use..When I got it the motor was stuck in the up position. Tore the whole hydraulic unit down,,found a little crud but nothing major. But,,someone before must of clamped vise grips or channellox on shaft to try to horse it down,,bad idea. They gouged the shaft bad,,tried to clean it up,,filed it a little but when shaft hits that spot it leaks a little fluid out. The shaft is no longer available,,and I cannot seem to find one on the web.. I think that a little thicker fluid would work,,the boat is used very little. Or would be interested in used shaft/cylinder if anyone has one,,no junk.

The t/t fluid only comes in one weight. You need a new shaft.

There are numerous boat salvage yards online. garysmarine dot com in Green Bay Wisc has been very good.

if you run too thick of a fluid you can harm the pump. Additionally, the bypass valves might not open properly if you hit something in the water. You would be better to polish the shaft, replace the oring in cap with a four lobe "quad ring", and avoid using that trim height - until you find the replacement. If you insist upon using that replacement, then weld it up and grind it down.
