Re: What would You Do?

I'm not doubting you as some of the state regs are crazy but wondering why it would be illegal? Whats the downside to driving to the ramp with them in?

You need to read the regulations and laws that Minnisota has recently passed. Big fines from what I've read.

I don't know the specifics but it can get into the many many hundreds of dollars pretty quickly. I haven't heard of anybody getting the full brunt of it but I've been checked once and despite my best efforts they found one little green thingy hiding inside a wheel that could have been a fine if they were in the wrong mood.

Invasive Species laws. There is a chance to move bad critters from lake to lake.

I boat in the ocean, I guess that's why I haven't heard of it. Makes sense for lakes though.

Will check it out, thanks.

Re: What would You Do?

I don't know I think the question of just leaving the drain plug in was pertinent. To which came the respones of what could happen if you do.

This also really isn't that funny as it did actually happen to me 2 weeks ago. Though nowhere near as servere as your picture.

The event went like this. Arrived home Saturday morning from working all night. Younger brother was here to pick up my old boat that I'd sold to him. He doesn't have a hitch yet so I had to pull it for him. So the deal was that I pull him to the launch, go over the operation of the boat then pull it to his house. When finished he was to come back with me to help me launch my new boat, run it and then switch trailers on it.

So we get the old boat out of the garage and ready to go then remembered there was no fuel. Go to hook the trailer to the truck and remember that the new trailer uses a 2' ball and the old trailer uses a 1 7/8" ball. Got all that fixed and away we went, everything from there went smoothly accept it's now almost 11am. Finally get home, switched receivers again, hooked up my boat and away we go. We get to the ramp and of course no keys. Call the wife and she says they were in the boat on the ledge by the throttle. Not!

Need the keys to of course start the engine but also to unlock a glovebox where the drain plug is kept. She shows up at the ramp and says "I put them right here" were they weren't. She then looks in another storage box and finds them in there. It's now almost 1pm and I've been up for 16 hours and the new boat is still not in the water. Frustrated and tired I back into the water and push off the boat. Pull the trailer and then remember!!!!!!!!! Plug is not in.

Anyways, I finally got back home with the boat in the driveway about 3:30pm and I needed to go to bed so I could get up at 9pm to go back to work Saturday night. All-in-all what a long day.

Moral of the story, stay calm, focused and don't do this when you're already tired or Murphy will get you!

I put the plug on the same key ring as the boat keys and the trailer lock to not forget. I also wrote "PLUG" on both of the transom strap levers.

You must have a long cable on your key ring  JKG of course. I like the tags on the transom straps idea!

And I guess no one is interested in Voting in the poll. I KNOW this is just for FUN but... I bet the guy with the Woody was NOT having to much fun on that day. IF/WHEN I get my WoodOnGlass boat built, I certainly hope I DON'T have this issue:facepalm:

The poll results are easy guess Wood. Cuss will prevail. No boat is worth dying for and crying will be less likely unless you built the boat yourself.

I voted because I to have experience in this area. Last year first fishing trip of the season I back the old bass boat down the ramp. Buddy fires it up and unless the ramp is crowded I usually just sit there a few minutes while it warms up. So I'am leaning on the truck talkin to him and calm as can be he says " You put the plug in, my feet are gettin wet" The cussin started right there. No harm just hooked up real quick and drained it. Luckily no one around to see it.

Re: What would You Do?

Know much about Woody construction JNG???

I know that form was chosen over function in the design of that boat, and the form isn't worth 2 dead flies with that boat sitting on the bottom on the lake... does it still look sleek and sexy under water? It looks like a wood and chrome BM in the bottom of the toilet to me... and I'm pretty sure it won't travel very fast as a submarine, although the owner has earned the title of Submarine Captain now.... and is probably the laughing stock of that boat ramp now.

Delete safety features for looks and that picture is what you get.

... too bad he wasn't in deeper water, the chrome on that motor might have attracted some nice Crappie.

This is why I put the plug in before I even leave the house.

Wow!!! WHAT? Have you ever forget to put your pants down before you start..... without connecting to the key chain, signs on the bathroom wall, buddy reminders etc.? Or jump in pans before you are going to work?
Operate the boat same as operate any vehicle, airplane included. Would you have yourself or you family on board with this type of "captain"? Advocate them- hmmm...well it's up to you.

Re: What would You Do?

Take a boating class before you put something INTO the water !!

Rule .. before you unhook your boat to a trailer is to make sure your engine starts and gets up to temp.

Check Bilge compartments for leaks.

I dont know how these boats sink in the water.

Im thinking Ins. job here.

No reason NOT to put the plug in .. not to mention how fast one would wonder why the pump didnt kick in ( a 500 GPH will do wonders )

I have only seen something like this one time. A 500hp motor put on the back end of a jet boat. .. it floated off and sank. Only the tip of the boat was above water.

I think this could be a scam.

YD.

Re: What would You Do?

Ages ago when I worked at a marina, some guys who had been out all night launched their boat at dawn, but by the time they had backed away from the dock, it was sinking and soon only the top was visible. While a few of them were tying long lines to the truck in order to pull it back up the ramp, another ran to the shop to ask what it would cost to get it running. I gave them a guesstimate to pull the carbs, etc. By then the guys were honking the horn. They had drained the hull, put in the plug, and started the I/O Johnson. Made me feel pretty dumb. I was not trained, and had no boating experience, but I couldn't have guessed the motor chamber would hold air.
