What year 4hp evinrude?

Model 4837E Serial E0001265. I bought it used? Is water supposed to be exhausted like in the larger models? Or, how do you tell if the water pump is working? How long will it take for it to overheat if it is not working?

CORABELLE,IF I WERE YOU I WOULD BUY A REPAIR MANUAL,AVAILABLE AT THIS SITE! THEN CHANGE THE WATER PUMP. ON THE UNDER SIDE OF THE ENGINE COVER YOU SHOULD SEE A SMALL HOLE OR A SMALL PIECE OF TUBING WHERE WATER SHOULD PEE OR DRIP FROM!ALSO IT ONLY TAKES LESS THAN A MINUTE FOR A ENGINE TO OVERHEAT WITH A BAD WATER PUMP. BILL

Bill, I have a 78 85 hp evinrude and know where it "pees" from. I looked under the cover of the 4hp and don't see the same thing. I ran the 4hp in a 5 gallon paint bucket. (WAs this enough water?)I had the hose running in the bucket so it was under water the whole time. I did't let it run for long because I didn't see it peeing. How would I know if it overheated? I didn't stop running.<br /><br />I will get the manual. Can a novice change this? I watched a guy change the impeller on the 85. <br /><br />What part of Philadelphia? WE used to live by the art museum in 1975.

Hey Cora, My '69 4HP Evinrude discharges the water through the engine exhaust. To verify operation of the water pump, look for a spray (not a stream) from the exhaust vent about 2/3 the way up the lower unit.<br />Of course, I'm talking about a '69 model, your '78 might be different.<br />See my post from 5-01.

Hey cora, CW's reply was correct, some older small engines discharge water with the exhaust.About the water pump! just got one for my 90hp evinrude and it has detailed instructions and schematic with it.They are pretty easy! just follow the instructions . born and raised in South Phila. 2nd & Ritner.now living in Lansdowne, Pa bill

Corabelle, very simple to tell if your motor is overheating. Run for a few minutes (2 - 3 min), stop motor, remove cover and touch the powerhead near the spark plugs. Should get warm, but not hot.
