Late 60's / early 70's or so I believe but does anybody know exactly which year? I want to know at what year I should stop buying engines! And At the year that they stopped and went to the new fangled ignition systems, was it across the board on all hp's or did they stagger the elimination? I'm really only interested in the 40's and under. Thanks :)

A lot of staggering. And to add to the confusion, there was the Low-tension magneto in there between the Universal Magneto and the Electronic system.

I'm not sure "what got changed when," but you could find out a lot by surfing through the parts diagrams on www.shop.evinrude.com. They have info dating back to 1968.

And, although the parts will be the same, with the exception of things like cowling and badge pieces, Johnson info is available there too.

Actually, the Johnson models are there too. After you click on the link to get to the electronic parts catalog, you will see a drop-down box saying Evinrude. Click on the down arrow and you will see a list that includes Johnson. And other items of interest also.

I like reading the old brochures on the old OMC site. They advertise the new features like electric starters, loop charging etc. It's a lot reading but you get a sense of the improvements made along the way.

Actually, I have downloaded all the old omc flyers and also read them but many are very small are hard to read! It's a great way to catch up on old technology :)
