What year is motor?

I just purchased a Johnson 15 hp outboard motor whose model number is J15REDG. What year is this motor?

That's funny. You see I just bought this motor today for $900 because the guy that sold it to me as a "2001 Johnson 15hp". I called him back and he told me he bought it brand new in 2001 from a dealer and still has the bill of sale and owner's manual that says it is a 2001.

Is it even possible that the motor is a 2001? Would there be any other identification numbers in another location on the motor?

I just Bought a evinrude engine. please help I need to buy the tilt tube and I dont know what year is the engine the model number is 1356436 serial is j0003936 any please if you could give me some info on this engine

You sure the numbers / letters given are correct?? Nothing shows on those as a 2001 from what I can find. I may be wrong though !!

Yeah I rechecked the letters and that is the right ones. The guy says he has a bill of sale from the dealer saying it is a 2001 and they even the owner's manual. Seem's like the dealer may have gotten over on him. Do you think maybe this motor sat at the dealer for that long before it was sold?

I can't seem to cross that model number on the parts site. I can't find it on any cross reference. I think it would be strange for a dealer to have a new 15 horse engine for 5 years in stock. But stranger things have happened.

Check the welch plug on the motor. Usually an I/D number on there. Compare to what you have already.

I looked on the parts site and the only model number that I found that was close was J15REDS which was under the 1996 year and when you click on it some of the parts indicate used on S suffix and G suffix so I am guessing that is my motor. I really want to figure this out so that when I order parts it is for the correct motor. This motor purchase is by far one of the strangest things. Does anybody have any suggestions on what year I should use when ordering parts? I need to order new plugs and possibly a carburetor rebuild kit as the motor doesn't idle very well. Thanks for the input so far.

Plugs are easy, there should be 2 correct ones in it already. If they are not champions then use champions only though. Your motor is small and light enough to pop in the trunk of the car and take to the dealership. Show them what you have and get your parts.
