What year is my 9.9 Sailmaster?

This motor came with the Cal25 I just bought. Model # is J10SELCOM. Serial # E6043224. Started doing a little research and the COM has me stumped. Looked at the sailboat on the hard and the guy started the engine on one pull. I think he came down to the marina early and shot it full of ether. The previous owner said he had it serviced two yers ago but I'm planning on putting a new water pump in. It has an electric starter on it. Is there a charging system on it as well? I'm real new to outboards. The last boat I had an electric trolling motor. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to iboats!

Your motor is a 1985. Yup, it should have a rectifier to convert AC to DC for charging a battery.
Looked at the sailboat on the hard and the guy started the engine on one pull
Do you mean out of the water? If he ran it dry for more than a very few seconds its likely to now need a new pump impeller. In any case one thing to check before buying is that there is a good flow from the pee hole and that there is no signs of overheating if run for a spell.

If there is no sign of a lead for battery charging it has probably been disconnected at the terminal strip where the rectifier wires are connected. The three yellows are the AC from the coils to the rectifier the red is the positive output. The negative is grounded, being the rectifier case.

DO NOT connect the battery the wrong way round or you will fry the rectifier in an instant

Yes.

The motor is going home with me tomorrow to have a new water pump installed. The PO was vague as to when he had a new one installed. He thinks a couple of years ago.

There are a pair of wires set up to hook to a battery- one black one red. Is it safe to assume they are for starting and charging?

Roger that.

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully the motor will get minimal run time. I prefer the wind.

most likely but it is easy enough to just check that they do come from where i say. Off hand i cant remember where the black wire is grounded but it should be obvious that it is and that the red connects with the red from the rectifier.

The BRP Parts diagrams can be very helpful. You'll see the rectifier (#22) and the terminal block (#60) on the ignition system diagram
