What year is my Mariner outboard?

Hi all,
I am a long time lurker and finally decided to post. :redface:

I just got a Mariner outboard yesterday, everything looks great so far.

I have some questions:

1) It seems like that these outboard were made by Yamaha.
Can you confirm that? Are the parts easy to find?

Made in Japan
6E3 S120783


2) Can you please tell me what year it is and if parts are interchangeable with a Yamaha? If so, what would the Yamaha model number be?

3) The trash can which I filled with water and ran the motor yesterdays seems to be filled with black sludge. I assume this is the burnt carbon coming out of exhaust?

4) How do you tell if the lower unit has enough oil? Do you open the screw, keep adding oil till u cant add anymore? (I cant find a manual for this motor)

I did check the sticky'd thread, but I was unable to find the year. :redface:

After a quick search through Marina's parts, looks like some engine part like piston or piston rings are not available.

Anywhere they can be found?

The dougrussell site has probably the best schematics for Mariner engines with parts, another is boats dot net. Once you get a part #, you can check elsewhere.

I have a 40 and it can be a little difficult (expensive) getting some parts.

Thanks for reply, I did that and looks like other sites have pistons rings available *whew*

I don't actually need pistons rings, I was just searching around to see if parts are readily available.

One more Q :redface:
When I check the dougrussell website, there are 2 options for 5 HP 2 stroke Mariner:

0G710613 AND UP
0P017000 AND UP

Given my SN: 6E3 S120783

How do I tell which one is my outboard?

Strange, the plate attachjed to the shaft indicates its 5M
