What year is this motor?

I have recently gotten this old Johnson motor. I have no clue what year it is. It has 15 on side or motor cover. It is in a circle. The case splits in the middle to remove. The person that had it before me painted motor black. I can not find any numbers. Any suggestions on how to find it. Thanks

You are looking at a '54 or near there but no later than '58.

Thanks...<br />was able to scratch off paint.. model is FD 12 <br />s/n 1707270<br />Is this a 15 horse or a 18? All info I have found on FD 12 refers to a 18 hp.

FD-12 is a 1958 18HP, Etochman.<br /><br />Use a 24:1 fuel mix.<br />Champion J4C plugs, gapped at .040", set points at .020"<br /><br />Good luck. .
