What you choose yamaha 25hp 2 stroke or yamaha 30hp 3cyl 2 stroke?

Hello again,

I need some of your opinions on these two motors. I currently have a 2005 Yamaha 25hp 2cyl 2 stroke that is in near mint condition with low hours. I've been thinking of going with a Yamaha 30hp 3 cyl 2 stroke because my boat is rated for it. I've heard they are super smooth and are reliable and have good power. My 25hp chugs while at trolling speed and vibrates a fair bit, but it does have decent power. We camp with our 14ft boat and load it up heavily. The 25hp takes a bit to plane out under heavy loads, but does ok once we're on plane. I'm wondering if the 3 cylinder 30hp has more torque with the extra cylinder? If I do go with a 30hp I want to make sure it's in great shape, just as my 25hp is. What would you guys go with? Any experience with either motor?

If it was me...I would go with the 3 cyl 30hp if you can find one that is in good shape. I recently traded my 2cyl 25 yamaha for a 3cyl 25 yamaha....still trying to get it lined out due to it setting up for some time. However, a friend of mine that I duck hunt with sold his 2cyl 25 yamaha and bought a 30hp 3cyl and he went from 28mph to 32mph top speed. He's going to swap the prop to see if he can pick up more speed. There was a significant difference between the two motors...

the third cylinder does make considerably more torque. Mostly on the low end. At 5500 RPM there isn't a huge difference. The 30 is also heavier by a fair amount, so that is a consideration. Smoother it isn't....assuming the 25 is in good state of tune (meaning sync'd carbs, timing set properly, etc). Actually the 25 is pretty smooth, IMO (for a 2 smoke). The 30 is a good motor nonetheless, but don't expect the ease of tilting it like the 25. And don't expect the fuel economy either...

The 30hp trip is a great motor, we use to mod those things back ande the day and raced with them, great motors, go for it!
