Re: what yr(s) johnson???

Hi again losnbama. Yeah it's a pretty neat trick. It's not factory, but it works. You're right the oil is mixed with the gas in these old motors. For yours you want 24:1, which is about 5.5 oz per gal. I just round it to 6oz. Just think of the two lines as IN/OUT plus the vacuum line. You can get outbaord oil at any marine store, wal mart, some auto parts stores too like NAPA. Be sure and get TCW-3.

Hi losnbama. Overall, it looks pretty good. The coils look good and there isn't any major corrosion either. Look at the points if they look corroded, you can clean them up with a bit o fine grit sand paper, then clean them thoroughly and rest gap them to .020" when the rocker arm of the points is on the "O" in TOP, stamped onto the crankshaft cam. (better yet, get a new tune up kit with points and condensers right here at iboats for about $20). Then, turn the motor over 180 degrees and do the other set of points. You can then replace the flywheel and spin it a few times, with the spark plugs removed, to test for spark. Here is a handy link and a pic.

Going by the cowling graphics, rounded style lower unit and paint scheme, I am pretty sure you have a 1965 Johnson FD-19, 18hp.

Re: what yr(s) johnson???

hell again losnbama. the t-stats on these old gems are super simple. they just drop right into the hole you described with a little rubber grommet on top and a gasket for the housing and that's it. when the water temp gets high enough it melts the wax in the t-stat which allows it to open. When the water cools, the wax hardens again and the t-stat closes. I suppose you could use liquid gasket of some sort on the housing, but I always use the factory style gaskets and I've never had any problems. They usually come in a 1 or 2-packs for about $5. Here's what you need

Re: what yr(s) johnson???

well went to 5 parts stores and NONE of them sell plug wire by the foot.whats up with that!!!??? oh and also found 2 new fuel pumps and lots of odds and ends from an old johnny dealer in columbus,ms.this guy has 30 or so carbs.gaskets like crazy,a few props,he is just about wiped out on erthing else tho.i did manage to get a carb kit.ooo and piles of motor covers.so if anyone needs any of these let me know with model# and part # and ill see what we can do.i told him wish i had an inventory list.but he has soo many boxes overfull with stuff it would take months to catalog.

Re: what yr(s) johnson???

hmmmm....sorry you can't find plug wires. Sometimes small engine shops that work on lawnmowers, weed eaters, etc... may have some. I've also had luck at NAPA and Carquest. Other folks have been able to get it at their local Evinrude/Marine dealer. You can also order a complete kit here at iboats. It may take a few days to get to you though. Glad you found a source for other parts. If worse comes to worse, I'll get some wires for you down here and mail it to you, or something. Keep us posted.

Re: what yr(s) johnson???

thanks offer kfa4303 but i finally found a couple feet...but now after reading the manual im stuck with timing...i dont have the tool the manual rec's. ive read of another way to set it via a fastwin thread reply somewhere(been looking at so many hard to remember). ive got the 2 marks on the magplate but no notches on the flywheel.? there is a vertical line on the outside of the magnet cavities. are these the "notches" timing marks???

Re: what yr(s) johnson???

Set the points at .020" with the cam rider of the points aligned with the crankshaft keyway and, voila! Timing is set!!

Re: what yr(s) johnson???

yup. correct installation of the flywheel and gaping of the points is all you need to set the timing. yet another great feature of these old motors.
