JUST LAUGH AT HIM... an say " i'm not scared of you.!!"

IT'S THAT SIMPLE..!!

an in time,,not long,, a week or two .. the monster keeps runnin' off faster an comes around a whole lot less an less..

in short time you'll be sayin' it wasn't that hard .. heck, i shouda done that along ago...!!!

Several years ago my Mom was able to quit after doing volunter work at the hospital. Seeing smoking related cancer patients on a daily basis gave her the willpower that she needed. I remember her telling me about one person in particular that would step outside and smoke though a tube in their neck. She had smoked for over 20 years and was able to quit smoking in two months after working at the hospital.

Since cigarette smoking is merely a habit and not an addiction, the best way is to just make up your mind to quit......

But only if YOU really want to quit.

Throw your cigarettes away and do not "BUM". If you fall off the wagon and buy a pack, throw the other 19 away. Tear them up and flush them down the toilet, so you won't be tempted to "dumpster dive". If you smoke 17, ditch the last 3.

Get off of your butt and start walking - every day. Increasing physical stamina will help you realize how much better off you are without cigarettes.

Learn to drink coffee or beer, fish, sex or whatever else you normally do, without associating cigarettes with the activity.

Keep saying to yourself what a stupid, expensive and deadly habit smoking really is and how proud your children will be when you quit for good.

Be a leader to your smoking friends, by saying "no thanks" if they offer you one. DO NOT PREACH TO THEM ABOUT QUITTING! They may get it on their own.

JUST DO IT!

Marty

When my time came I used patches. I have not smoked going on six years. After 2 packs a day for 32 years the fear ran rampant about quiting. I loved nicotene but cigarettes were wearing me down.
Near the end of the patch routine I got the bright idea to supplement the whole program with cut quarters of 4 mg nicotene gum. I still chew it today. It's probably no more expensive than smokes have become today but it has none of the negative effects of smokes or chew.

It's different for everybody.
The exercising and different outgoing activitys are important. They keep your mind off the smokes and use up time that would be spent smoking.
The level of torture and difficulty in being smokeless made me more determined to not pick up a smoke. I didn't want that experience to be endured again.
I used patches until I forgot one one morning before leving to work. This was about two weeks after I quit smoking. I panicked all the way to work. Once there, I made the decision to make myself last throughout the day. It was a major accomplishment and I knew I had them whipped after that day.
I continued with the patches, purposely forgeting them on and off. Swore not to buy a fresh box and didn't.
It was helpful also because my wife quit at the same time. We walked after work and went on long hikes and horseback rides on the weekends.
It's been 4 years and it was the best thing we've ever done for ourselves, our lifestyle and finances.
Goodluck on your new lifestyle.

Heinz,
As stated above, make up your mind to quit. It also helps to tell someone that you really care about that you have quit smoking. Makes it harder to start smoking around that person after you make public the committment to quit. You can do it.

Well, I don't agree that it is not an addiction.

A researcher at NIH told me years ago that nicotine is the most addictive drug legally available without a prescription.

I quit successfully using the prescription drug, Zyban. It was very effective in breaking the habit. It is expensive, but cheaper than smoking. Ask your Doc for it.

Once the dependency is broken, not starting again is like an alcoholic not drinking again. It takes careful avoidance of tobacco.

Good luck. :)

Quitting smoking is not easy. You must make up your mind that you are not going to be controled by smoking. I substituted water for cigs. Every time I wanted a smoke,I would drink a big glass of water. Soon all you think about is a place to pee. Been smoke free for 12 years now. Good luck :) :)

hello
dude My hats off to ya. I smoked 3 packs a day from 1980 to 87 then started again in 1990 and did 3 packs a day until feb 2000. my daughter was overweight and bet me she could lose 10 pounds if I quit, she did and I did. not a day goes by that I dont reach for a smoke. just remember why you quit in the first place and like you were warned. do not smoke even the first one again. that is how I became readdicted. its just to easy. the physicall addiction and withdrawel is over in 3 days. the habit is for a lifetime.
good luck and keep posting smoke free :)

Heinz
I've only talked 1 person into doing this. Have someone that cares about you take a hair from the under side af a female horses tail and thread it through the center of one of your smokes. They cannot tell you when they do it, cause you'll through the pack out. When you light this cig, you'll quit smoking forever. It tasts so bad, almost garanted to puck. The girl I talk into doing this to her huby, said he quit, never could face a smoke again!
Richard

WRONG!
Nicotine is highly addictive.
Hallmarks of addiction
University of Vermont professor John Hughes, an expert on nicotine dependence, says the scientific consensus is that "the core of the issue [over dependence] is the loss of control over use. The drug controls you -- you don't control the drug."

Re: Whats best way to quit smoking(cigarettes)?

i have tried to quit many times, not a day goes by i dont think of quitting. the closest i came to quitting(6 months) was with the zyban method like JB said. however if anyone wants to try it, i suggest talking to your doctor and tell him that you really cant afford the zyban ($90 for 30 tabs) and if he could give you a script for wellbutrin. which is the same exact thing except your insurance will pay for wellbutrin. if the doc is cool he'll ask you a few questions pertaining to depression and then give you a script for wellbutrin.
you keep smoking for two weeks while taking it. by the time you hit the 10th day you'll find yourself just taking a couple drags then putting it out. the taste will be so terrible, by the time the quit date comes you'll be ready! because you'll know that the cigarette tastes like owl crap.

Re: Whats best way to quit smoking(cigarettes)?

Each of us "born again breathers" will have a success story. Mine comes not from my will power or mind over matter abilities but a set of very fortunate circumstances.

Twice have I "quit" for periods exceeding a year yet my craving for nicotine remained as strong as ever. IT IS BOTH A HABIT AND AN ADDICTION, THE ADDICTION IS STRONGER THAN THE HABIT.

My defining moment came when a colleague reported in one morning with the comment "I am being admitted to hospital tomorrow for a triple heart bypass. My Doctor has told me that my smoking has contributed to the buildup of cholesterol and that should I not have surgery I will die."

Six weeks later I saw him again complete with anti thrombosos socks, scar in the chest, scar in the leg where they tried unsucessfully to get an artery for the patch. Scar in the arm where they finally got the artery. He was a sight.

Having smoked for some 25 years I was so moved by the picture of a 5 year younger colleague that I took my pipe and tobacco and dumped it. For the first two weeks I craved therafter it was easy. It is now 21 months and I feel like I have never smoked.

No secret, just a lot of fortunate circumstances. the right time, place etc. I suppose it was my fear of surgery that proved to be the motivator. I am fortunate but know this, without a valid reason that you are comitted to and have bought into you will find it difficult to quit. Do it for you and the benefits to you.

Good luck
