Re: Whats best way to quit smoking(cigarettes)?

Someone asked about smokeaway pills......

I know one person who used them. He was 50years old and has been drinking and smokeing way to much since he was 15years old. It was getting really bad for him, he was smokeing three packs a day. He was drunk one night and he set his bed sheats on fire with a cig. Then he saw the smokeaway thing on TV, he called it and bought it. He took the pills for less then a week and quit, just like that. I thought when he drank he would smoke again, but nope! He quit for almost 8 mounths now. We where all proud of him.

He also started a bank account, he's been known to blow all his money and lives by himself/.

He's putting all the money that he would spend on smokeing and putting away for when he retires.....I hope he makes it that long,.........

Wow , thanks for all the hints & encouragement! I actually told Kaiser docs to give me pills if possible, they ask if I've been tru 6 WEEK cessation pgm.???? I say hell no, I travel and work too much! Dorks! Thinkin of patch or gum, mom inlaw used gum 8-9 yrs ago and worked well. I'd like to go cold turkey as well, but **** it's tough when your'e stressed at work and home and travel lots(ie, smoking ok in restaurants out of CA, etc)! I do do the counting cigs, really helped me cutdown. Heard bout Welbutrin too, may try that after talking to docs? Thanks again, I'll keep all posted, Heinz

I think it's great that you want to quit. I tried for at least 5 years to quit (smoked for almost 20 years).

I was not a heavy smoker (2-3 pack/week) but I loved to smoke. I associated smoking with a variety of activities:

1. Jump in the car-Light up right away
2. Jump in the boat-Light up right away
3. Bored or stressed - have a smoke
4. Drinking-need a smoke.

The reason I failed for 5 years of attempting quiting smoking was I did not change my habits.

Well this year, I had a total hip replacement. Had my last smoke day before surgery.

Couldn't smoke in hospital.

Wife would never buy me smokes.

I didn't drive or boat.....

No stress and not bored.....

Well, when I went back to my old habits: Driving, boating, drinking etc. etc. I no longer associated those things with smokes.

I've only quit for 5 months but I hope I'm done with it. I still go outside with my coworkers that smoke. I don't. I still sit in smoking sections with my smoking friends.

But I don't want to smoke any longer.

It is the hardest thing I ever stopped doing. Again, let me repeat, I LOVED to smoke.

Oh, I should also say that I took the money I would have spent on smokes ($20K) and I bought a brand new boat. Guess that would help too!

Joe

i didn't smoke for 20 years or anything but i tried to concentrate on why i wasn't smoking when i wanted one really bad:
smelly hands
smelly clothes
$$$
congested breathing feeling
being a slave to those little *******s

try to avoid settings that will make you want to smoke for awhile....bars, the side door at work with your smoking buddies, any of the old habits that were associated more with smoking than anything else.

try to gain some momentum from going without for awhile. remind yourself that you haven't been smoking for a few weeks and don't really want to go back to square 1 for a little puff. its not worth it.

it help's to develop some new habits or hobbies that have nothing to do with smoking. that way, you can get away without worrying about the constant reminders for a bit.

and, don't kick yourself in the rear too hard for sneaking 1 every rare once in a while. its easy to get discouraged and jump off the wagon, just keep getting back on and try to do better than before.

you've got to be committed to it

smoking is ONLY mildly addictive. Several weeks after you quit most of the nictotine addiction goes away. What is MOST addictive is the mechanical habit of smoking...substitute toothpicks or sunflower seeds to satisfy the need to fidget. There are so many greedy people trying to sell you a planned way to quit (just like diet plans) that falsley gives eveyone the impression that is harder than it really is. There is only one plan that works and is free...your mind. Good Luck, you can do it!!

This may seem callous but read it anyway, it's your life. As I write this I'm in Florida and every day I walk the beach and see many older women without men on the beach and wonder how many had husband smokers. Point of interest, our local paper prints a list of people who quit smoking in the last 24 hours, unfortunately the list is called the Obits, In all honesty I never smoked so I can't appreciate what you're going through, but my wife smoked for 20 years, she quit ONLY when SHE wanted to, no amount of nagging or any thing else I tried stopped her one bit, you're the only person who can make you quit, there's no magic wand that does this, it's tough but take a walk through a lung cancer ward and ask yourself, is this where I want to end up? Justmy2centsworth.

Re: Whats best way to quit smoking(cigarettes)?

in 96, the ex stampeded out the door (with an azz three and a half ax handles wide, stampeded is the only term that fits), and without cigarette smoke constantly in my face, it was easy to quit

(well, not EASY, but doable, I just ... QUIT!)

made up my mind, NO MORE SMOKING GIRLFRIENDS (hehehe ... Ill behave!)

so I would only interview non smokers, hmmmmm, blonde, blue eyes, and you can suck a lemon thru a straw? oh, and YOU SMOKE??? Bye!!! (well, maybe one date :p )

in 99 I met jennie, and it never registered that she smoked until I spoke with her on the phone

heard a click ... very familiar click

damm ... you smoke?

yes I do, why?

not around me you dont. if you do, you go outside to do so, then you brush your teeth and gargle with scope, and wash your hands thoroughly.

(her husband smokes, which is why she wont quit)

she did ok for a while, then one very cold day, its really really cold out, cant I smoke in here? please?

it was bitterly cold out, strict or not, Im not heartless

Kool cigs, much like the Newports I was used to

next cigarette, here, Ill light that ...

big mistake!

shes still with him, still smoking, ah well, her loss

Meanwhile, her little green monkey remains, the only break I get is Delaware has them for 24 a carton

Liz smokes Marlboro, the little red box I spent 20 years smoking, so in that regard, things arent much better

But ill tell ya, I was leaning over the bed this evening, having a cigarettte after 4 hours without one, and really didnt want it, wanted to just get in the truck and go

and it occurred to me, you wont smoke in this replaceable bit of tin, but you WILL send smoke into your non replaceable lungs

WTF?

anyway, I have a month off in december/january I am getting the patch, and quitting these **** things

AGAIN

but for the last time

I was lucky enough not to ever take up the addicting habit, however the rest of my family did. I'm the only one who doesn't smoke or use some type of tobacco product.

I firmly believe that it's the power of the mind.
If you really want to quit, then you will.
Like the old saying goes, you can't help a person if they don't want to be helped.

Tobacco these days is a very powerful drug.
I believe the tobacco industry HAS done something to the tobacco to make it more difficult to quit.
It's far more potent today than it has been in the past. Ask any long-time smoker.

If a person sets their mind to do something, then they will and nothing will stop them.

Good luck on your endeavor, and I'm glad you are taking the step to quit.

H.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned yet. And it's all the more reason to get active and bring a healthy lifestyle into the ritual.

For some, you know your being successful at kicking the cigarette habit when half of the your grocery cart contains ice cream, cookies and Little Debbie
snack cakes.
It took a year to loose the 30 lbs. I gained.
It was all worth it though, every bit of it.
Very honestly at 48, I feel and am in much better health and condition then I was ten years ago.

Re: Whats best way to quit smoking(cigarettes)?

I've used the Wellbutrin myself and I think it did help out amazingly well. Makes the cigs taste like azz and I found myself just plain forgetting to have one in the beginning stages of it while your still supposed to be smoking. I have heard some horror stories of some phsycological affects from the pills though. I didn't experience anything major myself...only some very, very strange dreams, nightmares.

One thing that is for sure, as everyone else has said, you MUST really want to quit and be ready to. As easy as those little pills made it to quit for about 2 months, I started again and smoke to this day. I wasn't ready, not in the state of mind to quit.

The local Oneida Nation, Inc. are pushing me closer now though. We get away with paying only about $30 for a carton through them now...$5 to $6 a pack anywhere else. But in an effort to "help" other local businesses, they will begin collecting taxes on cigs....only they will be keeping the money. They say it will put the other businesses on a more level playing field with them, their many gas stations, world class casino (still on the books as a dairy farm) and soon to be 30 story hotel! That was sure nice of them
