Ah hum Sean, check out your avatar! :)

I myself think that I gotta get out of the rat race threads too, although I post very little in them as it is.

LMAO - My avatar... yeah... I never thought of that... I wonder if I'm offending them with my avatar. The avatar I have on is because there is a Jeep... not because of JS... :D

Re: What's going on in here?

Dang I wish that thread hadn't got deleted now. I specifically remember jtexas saying he didn't want to see any scren shots from the deleted posts.. Guess it's Ok for him to use them, though.

I agree with most of what's above. Feels to me like there's definitely been a change here. Can't exactly put my finger on the specifics.

That's precisely why I stay out of a couple of members' posts, and all political threads. That's my choice. However, I am very proud of the fact this is a free country and they have the right to say things I disagree with or don't like. It's also my right to ignore them.

jt, Sorry, I did not make the connection between muslims and the pharse about the sticks and stones. I too do not care for the name calling. I got my share of it growing up.

I see this topic getting locked.

I don't know if they are or not to tell the truth. I would assume so since we kinda got the ground saturated. Our lake doesn't rise over a foot even in the heaviest week long rains. Of course it never drops below a foot in the longest droughts either, it basicly stays about the same.

Thanks ee..........I've been visiting since 2004 because of that avatar :D (even though I registered a month before it got here lol......didnt start posting until well after that though)

Posted by ee:

The thing that bothers me the most is that when these threads get nasty, I think about the very few female members of our forums and the fact that we hardly hear from them anymore. LF, Bassy, Serenity... it just doesn't seem like behavior that should be done in front of women. Yeah, its the internet, but I am the kinda guy who holds doors, opens car doors, that kinda stuff for women... and it just rubs me the wrong way.
I couldn't agree with you more. Too bad that we hardly hear from them, as usually their posts are a breath of fresh air amongst the troll stink.

Re: What's going on in here?

Well how do I put this? I guess the best way to say it is I'm mostly a lurker. Most of the political/religion hotbed topics, I'm in the minority view, at least as far as this site goes. Do I post in them, occasionaly, if I feel I can help to explain a point of view. From what I can type, I will very rarely if ever change anyones opinion. Do I read them, yes. Do I get upset sometimes, yes. Do I take time away from these boards, yes. Why? Mainly to contimplate the things I've read. Some of the ideas posted here make no sense to me, some are very insightful and lead me to looking at things differntly, the latter posts are those that bring me back. Still, I respect each and everyone of you. I would cheerfully break bread with you all at any given moment. I have seen many great minds come through this place. Since I first came here, in March 2002, looking for guidance I have seen this place grow ten fold in registered members and by a far greater number in knowledge and alround willingness to help. There are most definetly those who seem intent on stirring the pot. Some seem to do it merely by being inquistive as to how others, with different perspectives, view contreversial issues. Many times over I have seen relatively mundane questions/comments blown out of proportion and lead to attacks on individual. The mods, and ownership, of this site do a wonderful, and thankless, job of keeping the "flaming" to a minimum. Sorry for the long winded post, but I guess my point is, yes this place has changed but the old elements are still here, they have to be discoverd more so then when this place was more of a diamond in the rough, but to be honest, with just over 70,000 members it still is. I hope this makes some sense. In closing, to the "old timers" please keep posting. Don't let the few ruin your insights for the many.

Re: What's going on in here?

For me, I love the fact that so many have such strong opposing opinions of such topics as religion and politics.

I think that is what is so great about this country. If we all agreed on everything it would be quite boring.

With what is going on in the country right now, war, terrosiom and such, I expect opposing views. What makes it so interesting, we all have something in common (boats) and yet depending on education, family experiences, jobs, lifestyle, and location, we can have very strong views and disagree with each other.

I have been very busy lately and havn't been active for about six months on this site. I still log on and read, but havn't had time to voice my thoughts.

I have learned from all of you about boating, towing, and related events, and I think this part is just a bonus that makes life interesting.

I love the strong opinions, especially those who oppose my thoughts. Thanks for sticking up for yourself, I respect that, compaired to those who don't dare voice an opinion.

I still enjoy this site, I don't see that it has changed much, I am amazed at those who can post on most topics, do you guys have a job?

Thanks to all
Bruce

Re: What's going on in here?

I enjoy these forums way to much. I spend more time here than I should. Yep, Im addicted, and probably will be for a long time. I enjoy talking about anything dealing with or related to boats and fishing. Hopefully I can also help someone on occassion. :)

I dont post in the political or religous threads because I remember something my grandfather always said, "Opinions are like Azzh****, and everybody has a different one."

My beliefes and opinions on politics and religion are mine. I also know that each and everyone of you have your own valid opinion. Its not my duty to try to sway anyone here to believe the things that I choose to believe or disbelieve. If you think its your duty, GET A LIFE. I was brought up to respect people for who they are. I also believe that all of you are responsible and intelligent adults, or young adults, and you too have the right to believe whatever you want. Thats what makes us individualls. Each of us will do what we believe is best for our way of life. I have no desire to stick my nose into anyones business and try to sway the way you/they believe.

I see this forum as a chat/discussion forum. Not a political/religous flamming debate forum page for Trolls. Hel, if I never see another political or religous troll in this forum, it'll be to soon.

But.......Troll on if you must. :(

Re: What's going on in here?

FWIW, this tread is not a farewell address or some kind of finger in the air as I leave. I'm not so arrogant as to think my presence makes little or any difference to the site. Sort of like a penny to the national debt.

As pointed out by DaleT there are 70,000 who contribute here. There just seems to be a growing disrespect for the membership by a minority of members in some rather disgusting ways. It's uncalled for, and unneccessary.

Re: What's going on in here?

I personally don't think it has changed much, other than there may be a few more "liberal" voices willing to "risk it all" and voice their opinions more than there used to be. That is as it should be.

Personally I don't know what the problem is, but I try very hard to not become personal, and have a very thick skin so not much in the way of attacks bothers me. And my goal has never been to get anyone to change their mind. If there is a goal it is to get people to think.

There are people out there that care about politics and religion. Why else would something as innocuous as a "W" speech get 4 pages of responses?

There are some that don't care. So it goes. You have to purposefully click on a topic to review it, and there is always the ever handy browser "back" button...

It is not always easy to take an unpopular stand on some issue, but like any other muscle, the brain needs to be excercised to remain strong, and having full agreement on an issue is like pretending to lift weights--where there is no strain, there is no chance for any gain.

Hey, I like jokes and meat loaf recipes as much as the next guy. I just don't think I'd come here as often if that's all there was.
