What's my merc year?

How to find out what year my motor is. I have searched everywhere online and can't find anything. Serial #3720242 it's a 500 thunderbolt ignition 50hp 4cyl 2stroke

Okay so I have nother problem supposedly the serial number I gave you comes up as the model? I'm trying to find a few parts and they keep telling me that the number is wrong. I got this off the riveted tag on the transom bracket. I don't see any other numbers on the motor? Suggest anything?

Problems with my mer 500 thunderbolt

Serial number on the transom bracket tag says 3720242 ppl said it's a 1973.. well when I call any and every shop as well as look it up on line I can't find a single part. They say that the serial number is not found. Could there be a diff place I can look? I can't post a picture either says it's to big and idk how to shrink. It's just a pic from my phone. Please anyone with help let me know.

Jimmbo gave you the answer...Mercury does not go by year or the serial number but the RANGE of serial numbers.

So your serial number (3720242) falls between the range of 2858814 and 4140999.

Use that range when ordering parts.
