What's the difference b/w 1988 30/35 hp?

I know in 85? the hp rating was measured from the prop, so the '84 35 was the same motor as the '85 30... in '86 the 35 was a detuned 40, but in '88 the 35 returned to the 20/30 family.

What exactly happened in 1985-87? and how did the OMC engineers pick up another 5hp? was it just a mistake when they compensated for the HP rating?

I really don't thing it was anything beyond marketing. Same cylinder block, same carburetor, same exhaust tuner. People wanted a 35, so it looks like they badged it as such. A lot of boats were rated as 35hp max, so marketing might have pushed to re-introduce a 35 to fill that niche, as people tend to buy the largest motor the boat will handle.

thanks, i thought it would be something trivial, after i've read that it's impossible to convert the smaller sisters into 35hp, because the 35 was never actually a 35
